Yankees 5 - Cyclones 2

After going into extra-innings in last nights game, the Yankees jumped on the Cyclones in the first inning and didn’t look back. The Cyclones would go on to lose 5-2, the team’s fourth straight loss.

John Gant was on the mound Tuesday night against the Yankees and struggled right off the bat. After striking out leadoff man, Derek Toadvine, Gant surrendered a single to Kale Sumner. Brandon Thomas then drew a one out walk to put men on first and second, bringing up Yeicok Calderon. After hitting his third homer in last night’s game, Yeicok hit his fourth home run of the season giving the Baby Bombers a 3-0 lead.

The Yanks would score another run in the bottom of the third inning, thanks to the third error of the season by Anthony Chavez on a ground-ball hit by Toadvine. With Sumner batting, Toadvine would steal second base to get into scoring position with nobody out. After retiring Sumner on a foul pop out to first baseman Alex Sanchez, Gant surrendered a single up the middle to Brandon Thomas extending the lead to 4-0.

After the Yankees added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 5-0, Brooklyn responded with two runs. James Roche led the seventh off with a walk and advanced to second base on a balk by pitcher Cale Coshow. Roche then stole third base with Tomas Nido up to bat. After Nido struck out for the first out of the inning, a bizarre play occurred when Anthony Chavez singled to left field scoring Roche from third. Chavez would actually end up scoring on the play after an error by left fielder Matthew Oliberto fielding the ball and a throwing error by shortstop Jose Rosario who was the cutoff man on the play. With Chavez and Roche both scoring on the play, the deficit was cut to three runs as Brooklyn now trailed 5-2.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Cyclones tried to put together another comeback, but fell short. Nido led the inning off with a double that was followed up by a walk to Chavez, bringing up the tying run in Patrick Biondi. Biondi though would strike out for the first out of the inning and Gavin Cecchini would fly out to right for the second out of the inning. L.J. Mazzilli represented the tying run with two outs and drew a walk, bringing up Jared King who represented the leading run. King though would fly out to right to end the game. press release
