Chris Flexen (19) of Newark, Calif., went 8-1 with a 2.09 ERA for the
Kingsport Mets. The right-hander struck out 62 batters in 69 innings while
walking just 12. Flexen registered a 0.94 WHIP and held batters to a .209
average. The New York Mets selected him the 14th round in the 2012 Draft out of
high school.
Mack – This is a perfect example of someone you
can get when you pick a high school pitcher. There really is no way in hell you
can project whether or not he’s the real deal. He may look great against other
teams filled with children, or had a wonderful four or five week ‘season’ with
some travel team. You cross your fingers, send in your scouting report, and
hope for the best. Trust me, if he was a lock, he wouldn’t have been around
when the 14th round came around. You or some other team would have
scooped him up much earlier.
Flexen will most probably move on to Brooklyn
(with his buddy, Robert Whelan) and we’ll see if the dream continues.

What a difference a day can make. If you asked Mets fans
about Matt Harvey before to August 26, you would have only heard great things;
after all, he was the guy who struck out hitters while blood streamed down his
face, started the All-Star game at Citi Field, averaged 9.64 strikeouts per
nine innings against only 1.56 walks per nine innings, and whose appearance in
ESPN: The Magazine's Body Issue received a more-than-enthusiastic response from
some fans.
Just a day later, the very same question would be sure to
cause hysteria, exclamations of "Just our luck!" and "Why,
God?" and possibly even induce early labor in rare cases. That is, of
course, because on August 26 it was reported that doctors discovered a partial
UCL tear in Harvey's right elbow, which sidelined him for the rest of 2013 and
will keep him off the field for all of 2014.

break this up. This could be one hell of a pitching staff.)
So, Sandy Alderson had dinner with OF Curtis Granderson. Beat reporters
reported that no offer was made and, when asked, Granderson said they had a
nice dinner and the salmon was good. There was speculation that Alderson wanted
to offer a three year deal, but Granderson wanted more years. The thing is…
there was no offer made. I’m not trying to tell Alderson how to do his job, but
it is December, the meetings start this weekend, and all the other teams in the league are, like, signing people.
Can we at least get down to making an offer and get past the dinner stage?
First it was Cano, now Granderson. Is
dinner that important right now?
My guess
is that Granderson is a major target of Alderson, who may once again get
tangled up with the amount of years wanted in a deal here. The market is crazy
and the Mets are going to have to overpay someone to somebody. The choice is
whether Granderson is the right fit… for four years.
Let me
ask you a question… do you really care whether or not the Mets make an offer to
a legitimate star of this game that is, let’s say $3-5mil a year more than you
thought he was worth, or for one more year that you thought the market
dictated? Things have changed and you can’t have it both ways. Alderson can’t
be fiscal responsible. If he is, you’ll sign no one.
So, will
it upset you if Granderson is 4-yrs/$60mil, instead of 3-yrs/$42mil? Don’t you
just want someone signed right now?
BTW, I
don’t. I’m still willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and wait this
process out. We need one more outfield and a shortstop. Maybe another starter.

And, regarding crazy yesterday, the only guy signed or traded that pissed me off was OF Michael Choice, though Juan Lagares is no Craig Gentry (yet) so the Mets couldn't have talent matched the deal

Already has been reported today that talks are beginning to intensify between the Mets and Granderson. Rumored to be a 3 year deal however the team is willing to throw in a 4th year if it brings the net Annual Average Value down.
I expect that something will get done before next week's Rule 5 draft.

My 2015 rotation is Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Gee, Syndergaard, Montero, Mejia and DeGrom. Too many, I know but you can always trade away a few. And hopefully get a better return then Detroit did when they traded away Fister to Washington.
My 2015 bullpen is Parnell, Black, Familia, Walters, Edgin, Germen and Torres. Leathersich, Bradford, Kolarek, Huchingson, Church in Las Vegas as back up.

If the Mets can focus on the forest (2015) and what they have in house, pitcher wise, they can get past the trees (2014).
I still would rather have Cano than Granderson, offer him 8yrs $210mil. Then i would go with EY jr and MDD in left. Trade murphy and duda for prospects and that will save u about $10 mil to compensate for Cano over Grandersons contract. i think the Skanks outbid themselves on Elsbury, is Minaya in their front pffice now? Lol

Also I would be more inclined to go to a game if they sign Cano over Granderson, and I would definitely buy a Cano jersey not a Granderson. The Metsies would sure as hell make more more $$$ from a Cano signing. We need as much of a sure thing as possible not pay someone big $$$ coming off an injury plaqued season.

I think they would still be able to afford Martinez andFurcal for a million each. But the Cano deal won't bog down the outfield for years to come, for when we trade for Pederson or when Puello and Lawley come up? I think that's a better team going foward not just this year but next as well. Plus Cano would provide much better protection for Wright than swing and miss Grandyman. Imagine how much better wright will become with a top ten bat batting behind him.
No but it would tie up salary when it comes around time to extend Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler AND Noah Syndergaard.

Agreed. Cano is the best bat out there. But 8 year contracts don't work for anyone. If the Mets can grab Granderson for 3 years that would be awesome. I could live with 4 however. We start the year with C. Young, Lagares and Granderson. That's a solid defensive outfield. C. Young is on a 1-year deal so if he plays well, Sandy can deal him. If he stinks, Sandy can sit him and let Puello get some ABs. If Lagares regresses, C. Young can play CF and E. Young can slide in or they can bring up Puello/Lawley. Very versatile outfield.
If they could swing a trade for SS Alexei Ramirez to hit leadoff, the team should be much improved. I know Ramirez isn't a big OBP guy but he's a 2.5 WAR shortstop who plays everyday and he has good speed. He seems to be a salary dump kind of guy.

Yeah Mack, I'm also trying to keep the faith with Sandy Alderson. ....Mets fans all lashed out at him for not trading Byrd/Buck before deadline. Then, out of knowhere, he possibly ends up acquiring a future Closer and second baseman.
And lets obviously not forget that fans are going crazy about how soon Syndergaard will be taking the mound.......which may give the Mets a solid SP3 for the next plus years, in addition to a catcher d'Arnoud for same future......all for a 38 yr old knuckleballer.
Faith is earned. So far I have seen Alderson trade a future HOF outfielder, trade a Cy Young Award winner, do NOTHING with a batting champion but let him walk away and flip a few vets last year after failing to do so with Scott Hairston the previous year. Maybe he learns from his mistakes, but I have not seen him pull off an off-season trade in which he dealt from weakness (the Mets roster) and brought back strength.
But my scenario in year 4 you wil be paying wright and Cano about $47 mil, that's all the guaranteed contracts as of now. By that time our payroll has to go up with inflation? I don't think that is too much on the books.
Plus in 4years it all depends who owns this club!!!
If its the Wilpons we will be the north side devil rays and trade wheeler and Harvey a year before they are free agents.
If we have a new owner that actually put our cable revenue towards the club we will have enough to pay them.
In my opinion u need 2 solid bats to take your lineup to the next level, each one of them has to protect each other in the batting order, if Granderson is batting behind wright I am still pitching around him to get to grandy. He is a strikeout machine with not a good OBP. All grandy is is a good complimentary piece not a stud.

I am all in on Cano, there are so many reasons why this is the player this organization needs.
1) he is the best player available
2) makes wright soooo much better as well as the rest of lineup
3) that would make it 2 back to back .300 hitters with .375 OBP
4) yes at least 10 mill more per season than Granderson, but that could be made up in tix sales and jerseys
5) plays a premium position that would allow you have less power in the corner outfield position for now
6) makes team better defensively at 2nd and as well all around. Put EY jr or MDD in left. Until Lawley and Puello come up. Or when we trade for Pederson.
7) he has been a winner all his career and will be able to instill that into our younger players.
8) you wouldn’t have to trade any of our young depth this off season, and could give them another year of seasoning to build up our farm system
9) will also bring back some of the Latin fan base back that we have lost by losing Beltran, Reyes and Delgado over the years
10) has been able to remain healthy all these years
11) and last but not least it would throw sand in the Skankees faces every time he does well, especially when Ellsbury is on the DL
