Assuming that Carillo returns to Vegas, this is the season he has to hope a Mets catcher gets hurt and he gets called up - although they might go with the lighter hitting, better defensive Tomas Nido in that situation. Carillo seems to have a AAAA ceiling.

Beccera seems to be becoming the next Cory Vaughn.

Excellent comparison, Mack, though Vaughn produced more power.

Unless Carrillo has re-signed with the Mets, he's minor league free agent.

To advance his career, he should sign elsewhere. It would take either simultaneous injuries to DArnaud and Plawecki, or injury to one major league catcher plus Nido, to get called up if he returns to the Mets. At best, Carrillo would be 4th in line requiring 40 man roster spot the others already have. The Mets will not add a 4th to the 40 unless there's dire need.

LongTimeFan1, great point - I agree.

Correct Carrillo has filed for minor league free agency.

He's playing for a new contract right now. That said....former mets AAAA catchers havent had a good history lately.

Juan Centeno (MiLB Free Agent)
Albert Cordero (Out of US Baseball)
Francisco Pena (MiLB Free Agent)

Chris:

I think there's proliferation of these AAAA catchers across all of baseball.

They're useful organizational depth, some of whom get the call up more from need than capacity to earn a 25-man spot against better competition for back up role. They stand better chance to stick around as organizational depth and occasional call up if there's defensive carrying tool. Seems like there's always someone similar behind them to take their place when they've worn out their welcome.

Mack---I remember reading, some time after the Dickey trade, Sandy was quoted as saying Becerra was the "final piece". He told the Jays that if Becerra wasn't included then the deal was off. If the Jays kept him, we'd have neither Thor nor Travis on our team.

Bill -

Your memory is spot on.

The story back then was that the deal never would have happened without Becerra being part of it. Toronto sort of gave up on the kid the second after he was hit in the face with a fastball.
