THIS JUST IN - Astrubal Cabrera

The Mets are set to exercise their $8.5MM club option over infielder Asdrubal Cabreratweets FanRag’s Jon Heyman. Reports over the past month have suggested that the team was likely to do so, though there’d yet to be a firm indication that the team had definitively elected to do so. Their alternative was a $2MM buyout, meaning it boiled down to a $6.5MM decision for the Mets.

That's the Wilpon way -- get the mediocre player at the relatively low price rather than spend for quality like Mike Moustakas (or Todd Frazier or Eduardo Nunez). I know already the spin -- it's just a one year commitment, David Wright may come back, the sun will come out tomorrow, etc.

Maybe a sign-and-trade? But the Wilpons better construct a competitive team, because the fans who buy tickets know limburger when they smell it.

I pretty much wanted him gone all year, but since i’m not expecting to contend in ‘18, and since I really, really don’t want them clogging up the ‘19 payroll with a fading player like Frazier, i’m Ok with Cabrera returning. He definitely hit well the last couple of months of the season, and perhaps injuries were an issue earlier. My hope is that he plays 3B and that Flores gets the FT gig at second. If they go that route, i’d expect Flores to have a big offensive year (25-80-.290)... as good or better than anything they’re likely to pick up in FA this offseason.

Reese,
Even if Wright comes back, he won't be able to play 3B. He was already throwing like a little girl before so I can't even imagine how weak his arm would be now.

I would hope like Thomas, that Cabrera option was picked up as a backup while they try to sign at the very least, Todd Frazier and then trade Cabrera.

But if Cabrera was a malcontent child, why even bother? just say goodbye to him and Jose. Time to turn the page and cut the cord.

Oh...wait, these are the Mets.

Because it's all about the pitching and hopefully it returns to form to help us contend and if not he's gone after this year. Next year there are no excuses for management not to spend on a stud plus to put a competitive team on the field in 19' and if that doesn't happen we will then know there's no real hope going forward they'll ever spend again.

Why is everyone down on Cabby? He has hit. 280 in each of his 2 Mets seasons, with 62 2Bs and 37 HRs, despite time on the DL. His range made him less valuable at SS, but he's been fine at 2B and 3B.a versatile switch hitter with decent power from both sides, and still in his early 30s.

And 8 mil is dirt cheap for a player with his #s.

Like Bill, I am not so down on Cabby. Like most, I am no Wilpon fan, but this move is pretty much a no brainer given the tremendous uncertainty with both Wright and Conforto. Cabby offers flexibility, and while he lacks speed on the basepaths, he is a better hitter and fielder than Reyes.

I agree with Gary that 2018 is virtually all about pitching. I'd much rather the spending be done on securing a good reliable starter and a backend bullpen arm. I'd rather see Cabby at 3rd and a strong glove man at 2b. Wilmer will need to get his AB as a 1b vs.LHP (his defense plays at 1B).

I’m torn on Cabrera .. yes when healthy ( and happy) he is a good asset . But we have seen that he’s a sulker when he doesn’t get his own way .. I also fear that this means that the Mets won’t be going after any high impact offensive bats and that payroll will be lower than last season (hopefully I am wrong
