organization, where he was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft,
Borenstein has never appeared in a major league game.” Borenstein is also
capable of playing a bit at first base when needed.
While this is not an earth-shattering move by Sandy Alderson, it does demonstrate he is in the game
as a far as trying to fill as many holes as he can before spring training
begins. The invitation extended to Borenstein to attend spring training with an
opportunity to make the team that goes North is a step in the right direction.
Borenstein won’t be the second coming of Carlos Delgado, but, the least he
will be is a left-hand hitting Travis Taijerson. Does he have the potential of being the 5th
outfielder in Flushing? Well, I guess so though I still wish the team would go
big here before the season starts.
The Mets are supposedly interested in signing 1B Carlos Santana as first base insurance.
Santana is obviously the most talented first
baseman available in the free agent market. He will play next season at
32-years old and there is supposedly 10 clubs interested in his services.
I can’t even begin to take this rumor serious.
The Mets outbid nine other teams? Are you serious?
And this guy is not going to sign with anyone
for less than three years at a minimum of $20mil a year.
What about Dominic Smith? What about Peter Alonso?
Why not just shit can the entire draft process
and just sign old guys to huge contracts?
No… this is all bullshit and just designed to
get Smith to put the fudge bars down and get into the batting cage, not the
heavy duty weight room.

I am in total agreement with Boras.
There is so
much money in baseball now, especially in cities like New York. If the Wilpon
family wanted to build a champion baseball team, they easily could and still
make a buck to take home.
The Wilpon family doesn’t want to build a great
team. They want to build the most profitable business that they can. The
business happens to use bats, balls, and gloves. It could be steel. It could be
pillows like that dude from Minnesota It’s
just a business and they will never let any General Manager spend more than
their corporate accountants tell them is the most that can be spent to keep their
current profit margin.

Pairing Gordon with Amed Rosario will
solidify the timeless adage of being strong up the middle. These two guys would
provide exquisite defensive range and hopefully become a potent double play
combination for the foreseeable future. At the plate, Gordon and Rosario will
provide game-changing speed. Citi Field will become a triple’s haven and Gordon
will bring his 60 stolen base potential to the top of the lineup.

Zach Borenstein better get to work, Tebow is catching up. Seriously, he is close to a clone of high-ranking Taijeron, but since 75% of innings are thrown by righties, lefty hitting Zach is probably the more useful clone.
Fudge bars? Yum. The Mets need to draft and develop more power bats. It just takes one more in house bat thru the draft to avoid a mega contract free agent signing. That does not happen when you draft limited tools guys.
Gordon speed would be nice. I'd run to see a team with him and Rosario. Too bad Champ Stuart can't hit...switch him to 2B if he could. But he can't.
Baseball grossed an AVERAGE of $350 million per team, so the Mets could certainly up the spending.
I hope we do more this Hot Stove season than Borenstein and Purke

Pretty sure the Wilpons are paying $50mm per year just for interest on the bonds they issued to build Citi. Monuments to the Brooklyn Dodgers don’t come cheap, you know. Also, Ponzi schemes.
For these and other reasons, the Santana “rumors” are a joke, as are all of the other “The Mets have interest” stories. Step on up, but your 2018 tickets early (before you realize that nothing is going to actually change or get better!)”
Seriously, i’d be fine with saving by some money this year and playing TK+F (the kids plus Flores) if I thought it meant that they’d do use it to figure out where to spend, and spend big (and wisely) in the much better 2019 FA market. But that’s not what’s really going on here. Also, they’ll likely trade Flores - one of their only valuable chips - this winter for some stop-gap, just so they can convince a few more fans that they’re “getting better”. But... see above. Wash, rinse, repeat. Sigh.
Dee Gordon is the way to go. Just take on the whole contract and trade away Cecchini plus some low grade minor leaguers.

I'm all for having Wilmer Flores be the backup/alternative to Dom Smith. No extra money need to be spent here. I think if they want to strong up the middle then they need to target 2B as Cabrera is not much with the glove and range anymore. He'll man 3B. THe next target is another quality outfielder.
However, ALL of those moves take a back seat to improving the rotation and the bullpen.
Lets face it, right now, this team looks like Puerto Rico. Trump should declare the Mets a disaster...maybe we can get federal aid.
The outfield is the Mets' strength now. They have two very good players and two role players that have different strengths to help the whole. The fifth guy could just as well be Philip Evans, who could play seven positions. What is the need there?
The problem is definitely the infield. Allowing for your cornerstone to be Rosario and putting a stopgap like Cabrera at third base, you either need a strong first baseman and put Flores at second, or a better second baseman and put Smith at first. I would go with the latter because when you invest so much time into a player, you want to at least see what he's got.
So, the answer is get a better second baseman. Which one? Kinsler, who is the best leader to keep these kids focused and won't block Guillorme? Gordon, who has the best offense/defense package, but will quietly do his job for the next three years while Guillorme probably gets traded off? Or, Kipnis, who may give a little bit of everything but doesn't have a signature asset and also block Guillorme for three years?
By getting Kinsler and keeping Cabrera, next year leadership can be transferred to third base and the two kids will have a year of experience under their hats. Gordon will give your team it's best chance to win more games, but your leadership most come from a strong manager and coaching staff. Without knowing what the Marlins are wanting for Gordon, in a vacuum I think he's the best option. You can look to trade Guillorme while waiting for Giminez, or you see where things are next November.
While reading all the Kinsler rumors and knowing that after the Carlos Gomez fiasco that Alderson doesn't allow info to leak out, I'm thinking Kinsler is the distraction and Gordon is the target.
Anybody you obtained through the draft will be at least 2 or 3 years away. That will no way help us in the next year or two.
