BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (11-25) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 9-4 on Tuesday evening in the series opener at Mirabito Stadium.
Portland (21-16) raced out to a 5-0 lead highlighted by a four-run second against Ponies starter Josh Walker (2-1). Walker allowed five runs and six hits over 5.2 IP suffering his first loss of the year. He settled down though and at one point retired 10 Portland hitters in a row to keep the Ponies within striking distance. Binghamton scored runs in the third and fourth to make it a 5-2 game on RBI singles from Hayden Senger and Luis Carpio.
With Portland ahead 6-2 in the seventh the Ponies again inched closer with a bases loaded walk to Mark Vientos followed by Quinn Brodey being hit by a pitch to force home another run. That would be the closest Binghamton would get though as Portland tacked on three in the ninth, capped off by a two-run triple from Triston Casas.

POSTGAME NOTES: The Ponies were 2-14 with runners in scoring position with 11 left on base…Luis Carpio was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, he has now hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games…Carlos Cortes, Hayden Senger, Mark Vientos, Quinn Brodey, and Carpio all had multi-hit games…Binghamton has dropped three straight.

Binghamton has a 5.60 ERA this season - not pretty.
Cortes is a hit-producing machine. I for one like hit producing machines.
The Mets may want to consider adding in a lefty relief pitcher more to their staff heading into the second half. Perhaps someone like Justin Wilson, a veteran pitcher in other words, but not too old.
I think Taijuan Walker is having a really amazing season thus far. He is challenging for being the second best starter on this 2021 NY Mets team.
Maybe it's me, but with all the starting roster Met players out hurt or sick this season and their replacements playing at such a high level of play, the team does have a sort of crazy kind of feel about it that does kind of remind me of the 1969 improbable championship NYM team.
Does anyone else feel like this?
One NYM pitcher that I would personally like to see be given a chance somewhere else, is starter/reliever Robert Gsellman. I still believe in this Mets pitcher because we have seen him when on here. But here he is exactly like the Knicks' Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina, and Obi Toppin with the never going to get a chance.
A trade maybe even with the Yankees for like a lefty Matt Krook pitcher on Scranton Wilkes. The reason is that sometimes a new address for an athlete can work wonders towards a rebooting. And in both these cases it might just work out.
2B Luis Guillorme was sensational in yesterday's game. I did notice. What a peg home to get the runner.
This guy is underrated.
Anon, Flexen having post-Mets success. Maybe Gsellman would too. In many Mets seasons, Guillorme would be a starter.
