Puma NY Post: Kyle Schwarber’s three home runs torment Mets in loss to Nationals.
“The momentum of their previous week, when they beat up on the Padres and Cubs
— two legitimate playoff contenders — has dissipated and now the Mets have to
figure out how to survive a steady diet of NL East competition.”
MLB.com:
Schwarber ties MLB record: 5 HR in 2 games.
Tim
Healey Newsday: “Walker gave up four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings,
with Schwarber doing most of that damage. It could have been worse if not for
the Nats’ 1-for-9 effort with runners in scoring position against Walker, who
struck out five and walked none.”
Brain Joura Mets360:
“Walker left with the Mets trailing, 3-2. But Jeury Familia came on and gave up
Schwarber’s third homer of the game. Remember when all the hits off Familia
were bleeders? Good times, good times. Familia has now given up 8 ER in his
last 11.2 IP.”
NY
Post: Schwarber’s third home run was off a slider from Jeurys Familia. The
Mets never considered an intentional walk with first base open and Trea Turner
on deck. “The ball ran back over the middle and a guy swinging the bat like
that, he didn’t miss it,” manager Luis Rojas said. “Familia is a high-leverage
pitcher. He’s gotten a lot of big outs.”
Metstradamus:
“The Mets now need to pick up and dust off, as there are two teams closer to
them in the standings, and the Mets get a chance at them this week at home.
Jacob deGrom will hopefully start tomorrow, Joey Lucchesi’s MRI hopefully will
reveal nothing more than normal wear and tear, and hopefully some professional
hitters return to the lineup soon so the Mets can start rocking and rolling
again.”

“What’s Next…The Mets start off a new series with the Atlanta Braves at Citi
Field on Monday with a makeup doubleheader at 5:10 p.m. Jacob deGrom is expected
to go for New York, unless the team makes the call to skip him in the rotation.
There hasn’t been a starter announced for the second game just yet.”

Mets Injury Tracker: Jeff McNeil expected to be activated Monday.
NY
Post: “Brandon Nimmo, who has missed nearly two months after tearing a
ligament in his left hand that was originally thought to be nerve damage, began
a minor league rehab assignment Sunday for Triple-A Syracuse, going 1-for-2.
Michael Conforto played in that same game and could be within days of rejoining
the Mets after a strained right hamstring cost him the last month.”

Amazing
Avenue: Mets call up Jerad Eickhoff, designate Mason Williams for assignment.
“Eickhoff…after
a nice stretch of three consecutive quality starts in late May, he’s been lit
up in two starts thus far in June, allowing 12 earned runs in just 11 innings
of work against Buffalo and Worcester. In total, he has a 5.32 ERA in 44.0
innings with Syracuse on the season…Williams…hit
.212/.297/.333 with one home run in 37 plate appearances for the Mets.”
Mets.com:
Stat of the Day: Homer-happy Mets – “Over their last 45 innings dating to
Wednesday, the Mets have scored 10 times, with nine of those runs coming on
homers. The only exception was a Francisco Lindor RBI single on Saturday.”

Post: Mets owner Steve Cohen addresses MLB trade deadline, Jacob deGrom
contract.
Steve Cohen said the Mets are willing to go over the luxury-tax threshold, in the right situation.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) June 20, 2021
"We're not going over for a million, two million bucks. That's stupid," he said. "If you're going to do it, you're going to do it. We'll see what's available."
Steve Cohen on renegotiating deGrom's contract, which has an opt-out after 2022:
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) June 20, 2021
"I don't think it's the right moment. We're focused on this year. Obviously, it's something we're thinking about. Listen, we love Jacob. ... I don't think I could pitch to a 0.54 ERA. He's special."
Steve Cohen when the topic of free-agent-to-be Marcus Stroman came up: "These are big decisions, right? Nobody has an unlimited amount of money."
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) June 20, 2021
Me: "Some people are closer than others though."
Cohen, smiling: "You gotta be disciplined. We’ll figure it out when we get there."
One more highlight from Steve Cohen today...
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) June 21, 2021
Has Twitter been easier on you?
"It’s been tough. Try to stay out of controversy. It’s OK," Cohen said. "It’s never friendly. You just gotta roll with it. Just try to find harmless things to talk about."

The Mets’ future was on full display Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn’s 18-hit, 13-run outburst and Álvarez was once again a catalyst. Starting at designated hitter, the 20-year-old homered, doubled and walked in his second straight multi-hit game. Transactions:
New York Mets sold Al Luplow to the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 21, 1967.

964 |
Despite the four errors made by the Phillies, Rick Wise
wins the first of his 188 major league victories when Philadelphia beats the
Mets at Shea Stadium in the nightcap of a twin bill, 8-2. The 18 year-old
rookie right-hander's accomplishment receives little fanfare when his effort
follows Jim Bunning's perfect game in the opener. |
1964 |
On an unseasonably warm Father's Day, Phillies' hurler Jim
Bunning becomes the first modern pitcher to toss a no-hitter in both leagues
when he throws a perfect game to beat the Mets, 6-0. Gus Triandos also
becomes the first catcher to handle a no-hitter in both leagues. |
2006 |
Jose Reyes becomes the ninth player in Mets history to hit
for the cycle. The 23 year-old shortstop hits a leadoff homer in the first,
followed by a double in the third, then a triple in the fifth, and completes
the feat with an eighth-inning single in the team's 5-4 loss to the Reds at
Shea Stadium. |
1963 - The Mets
beat the Phillies, 3-1; only pitchers Al
Jackson and Cal McLish get multiple hits. The next game where the
only multi-hit players are the opposing starters will be 50 years later, August
4, 2013.
2000: The New
York Mets announce that SS Rey Ordonez will be out for the season because his broken
left forearm is not healing properly.

Good to see Luke Ritter go on a tear.
Megill looks pretty solid in that video clip…MLB stuff.
Nice to see Nimmo and Conforto hitting.
Carlos Cortes replacing the expensive Conforto in RF next year? 23 XBH in 37 games.
I was glad to see Schwarber do what he did - it reminds me that our hitters can do better. Schwarber in 2 games has as many HRs as Dom in 11 weeks.
Schwarber hit all his homers on fastballs and theey kept throwing fastballs to him. Why? Also, why did they throw him a strike after the second HR Saturday? I like Luis Rojas but that was not the best strategy.
I like Luke Ritter "the Hitter" a lot. Another fine infielder in the system.
Mets are willing to take on salary. We will see if they make a move. They need to have a big homestand against the Braves and Phillies. They are still an all or nothing, try to hit HRs offense when the ball has been deadened since last year. They have improved on defense this year but they still need to learn to play small ball.
If you want them to take on salary at the all star break you might want them to lose the 🦁share of the next two series.
