1969

Tom Seaver strikes out 14 batters in eight innings en route to the Mets' 5-2 win over L.A. at Shea Stadium. The victory, fueled by Ed Kranepool's two home runs, improves the second-place team's record to 24-23, the latest they have been above .500 in franchise history.

1980

The Mets select 18 year-old Darryl Strawberry as the team's number one pick in the June draft. During his stormy eight-year tenure with the team, the 6' 6" outfielder will establish franchise records with 252 homers and 733 RBIs.

 

1981

Returning as a free agent after a two-year absence from the game, Royals catcher Jerry Grote hits his first home run since 1976. The former Astro and Mets backstop's grand slam helps Kansas City overcome the Mariners, 12-9.

1990

Appearing as a pinch-hitter in the top of the eighth inning, Dave Liddell, playing in his only major league game, singles in his lone plate appearance. The Mets' 23 year-old catcher will stay in the contest, catching the remainder of the team's 6-3 loss at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium.

 

2012

In a pregame ceremony at Citi Field, John Franco becomes the 26th member of the Mets Hall of Fame. The former southpaw reliever, who also played for Cincinnati and Houston, leads all lefties in all-time saves with 424, which includes 276 for the Mets, a franchise record.

2006 - In a long day at Shea Stadium, rookie catcher Eliezer Alfonzo hits a two-run home run for his first major league hit, helping the San Francisco Giants to a 6 - 4 victory over the New York Mets in the first game of a doubleheader, which ends after 3 hours, 12 minutes. In the second game, already delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain, the Mets win 3 - 2, in the bottom of the 11th inning, when Lastings Milledge scores the winning run on a short sacrifice fly by Chris Woodward. The twin bill ends close to 11 p.m. ET.

2012: The Mets complete a three-game sweep of the Cardinals with a 6 - 1 win to reach a virtual tie for first place in the NL East. Jon Niese strikes out a career-high 10 batters in 6 innings before leaving because of an accelerated heart beat. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hits a homer and drives in 3 runs. The Cards lost the first two games of the series by shutout, including Johan Santana's no-hitter on June 1st, and finally end their 26-inning scoring drought in the 8th, on an RBI single by Adron Chambers.

2016: The Marlins get some unwanted publicity when they are the first to publicly announce the death of boxing great Muhammad Ali on the Marlins Park scoreboard at the end of tonight's game against the Mets. Team President David Samson had heard the news from a person close to Ali, but had not realized the family had not made the news public when he calls on the scoreboard operators to pay tribute.

Absolutely unreal that after all this time, Villar comes up lame, and one of the two sore hand boys, JDD, is out several weeks now and NOT ready to start rehab!

Lindor and McCann revive, and the outlook brightens greatly.

Is Megill better than Peterson right now? I wonder.

Bob - Blankenhorm is here because he can play middle infield and because he cab be released when others come back - which will hopefully be soon.

Mets bullpen striving, thriving, more than just surviving.

The bullpen is really showing up very well. It's going primal now.

The Gsellman, Lugo, Familia tag team could get the job done as a five start approach when needed to. I still say any one of these relievers could be stretched out. They are veterans with experience starting.

I like lefty starter David Peterson a lot really, and I see his value here going forward completely. He has that. But he isn't there yet, but could be soon. Maybe David down to Syracuse for refinement and realignment with Jerad Eickhoff brought up here to take his place, could make some sense.

McCann has bat. No Wuhan one. Best looking power homerun yesterday since David Wright trolled City Field third bag. What's even greater is that this NY Mets team now (actually) has two offensive threats sharing the same one dish. Platooning each keeps both healthy and ready for the gold mining expedition coming later on this season.

Jarred Kelenic (remember him) batting a frail .111 BA after 72 big league at bats with Seattle. And your Justin Dunn showing a 1 win to 2 loss record with the same team. This is precisely why college and MiLB numbers don't mean very much of anything to me. All the whining and crying here when these two got traded. My Lord.

For upcoming draft, if Mets cannot trade up to get Jack Leiter then get Sam Bachman, RHP Miami (Ohio). Outfielders are easier to get with trades to fill roles and the Mets have an abundance now of good relatively still young ones. But stellar pitching, now that's a horse of a different color entirely) is still this team's traditional forte and rightfully so. Remember this, unlike the foolish NY Knicks never do.

Just one big man center with offense and rebound and the Knicks go to round two most likely. They always chase the fancy pants guards and never the team's frontcourt needs, which are abundant. Only PF Randle stays there.

My hat is off to Robert Gsellman.

In fact, it's on my plate with marinara sauce.

He's been huge for Mets this season.

Always been durable, always able to go 2-3 innings. But he's really shown sustained quality this season.

Which goes to show you about relievers. You never know. All the more reason to keep a healthy mix on hand, something the GMs have done this season extremely well.

I could two cheap shot on JD's hand injury. You are implying his soft, right? Is that what you are saying?

Have you tried gripping a bat and swinging it at full velocity with a broken finger?

An injury is an injury. And I don't think either Nimmo or Davis deserve shade coming armchair fans.

Nah, Jimmy, I am just kvetching over these bewilderingly long injuries. Nimmo and JD would have been better off with broken fingers. They’d both already be healed and back. You start out thinking a few days...pretty soon you hope it’s not a few months. Where’s Iron Man Jed when you need him?
