Mark Vientos Named International League Player Of The Week

Syracuse, NY - Syracuse Mets infielder Mark Vientos has been named International League Player of the Week for the week of August 15-21. Vientos hit .448 (13-for-29) with two RBIs, three home runs, two doubles, and nine runs scored at Charlotte. The 22-year-old tied his career high with four hits on Sunday.

Vientos has reached base in 24 of his last 25 games since July 10th with hits in 22 of those 25 games. During that stretch, Vientos is hitting .378 with 25 RBIs, seven home runs, seven doubles, 19 runs, and eight walks.

This is the fourth time this season that a Syracuse player has won a weekly league award. Daniel Palka was named the International League Player of the Week for the week of June 13-June 19, Travis Blankenhorn was the International League Player of the Week for June 20-June 26, and Gosuke Katoh was the International League Player of the Week for July 4-11.

Like I have been saying....

Baty will be excellent - but he is career-wise right now about where Vientos was this time last year, when Vientos did mostly AA and some AAA and hit over .300 his last 200 at bats with 21 HRs.

Vientos got skipped over for Baty not due to his fielding, but because Escobar has hit righties poorly in 2022, so Baty could be a natural platoon with Escobar. Vientos, to me, is a better hitter than Baty right now - but he kills lefties, which Escobar has hit well against, too.

If Vogelbach goes on IL, due to a lame leg, I hope Vientos gets called up and not Dom Smith.

Or, if they want to stay with bringing up a lefty bat, try Daniel Palka over repeated failure Smith. Palka is .292/.271/.447 against righties this year, 23 HRs and 67 RBIs in 88 games, and has been really hot of late - just not as hot as Vientos the Bomber.

Dom has hit pretty well in his 12 games in the AAA penalty box in August, but 12 games of "solid" is not enough. Make him earn a recall. Hit like Vientos for a while.

I see Baty as a future star. Love his approach in the box. If Vientos is a better hitter I'm anxious to see him play.
