Another fill-in post for our injured list clean up hitter, a true superstar, named Mack.
Just call me Wyatt Young - I can only hope I'm as versatile.
Very interesting observation, to me at least - Daniel Vogelbach was quite a burly fella when drafted in the 2nd round in 2011 - 68th pick overall.

Nimmo was the Mets’ 1st rounder in 2011, Cory Mazzoni was round 2 (71st overall).
Back in January 2011, Mack posted the following pre-draft post:
Power is an asset for Dan Vogelbach and he presented it last week at Chase Field in Arizona at the 5th Annual Power Showcase. You may have heard of a kid named Bryce Harper who hit a 502 FT home run in the 2009 power showcase at Tropicana Field.
Well, Vogelbach hit a ball 508' at Chase Field to set a new Power Showcase record. He hit 30 in total.
His power does come pretty easily, or so it looks, with a well balanced powerful swing from the left side. He has lightning fast wrists to generate enormous power. He's not a one trick pony though.
When I saw him run a 60 yard dash, I was shocked. He has average speed, plus speed for his size, and is a better athlete than you would expect. Replacing him? Brett Baty? Mark Vientos? Blanky Blankenhorn? Wyatt Young?
Nope - Devin Marrero. The logical choice that no one thought of. He is a career .194 hitter in the big leagues.
Tomas Nido is sick and very-light-hitting Martin Perez is filling in for him.
The Braves must be pleased that 2 such non-hitters are playing for their opponent.
Then the Cookie, and Mets, crumbled, trailing 10-1 in the 6th. 13-1 final.
Just one game, right?

Regular pitchers? Surrendered 13 runs in 7 IP.
Darin Ruf? 2 IP, 14 pitches, 10 strikes, 1 hit, no runs. Draw your own conclusion.
MINORS:
Slow day on Mondays in Minorsville. Kids need R&R, too.
DSL - just 4 runs in the two DSL games: bo-ring! You don't hit, I don't waste ink here.
FCL - 12 runs scored! 12-2 win! That's more like it! My ink usage is heavy!
1st rounder blazing Jett Williams was 2 for 4, a HBP, and 3 runs scored. One hit was a 3 bagger.
4th rounder Jacob Reimer is 3 for 8, with a HR and 6 RBIs so far (hey, the Mets need do a replacement for Luis Guillorme....). This 18 year old is instantly exciting.
75th overall pick Nick Morabito got his first hit, going 1 for 6 today.
Catcher Vincent Perozo (international) went 3 for 6 with his 4th HR. This year, the 19 year old is hitting .233 with 4 HRs, 25 RBIs in 139 at bats. His catching game is a work in progress. For a team that has had a Peraza, and has a Peroza, it now has a viable Perozo too.

Hey Tom, whose slashline is .345/.424/.690/1.114 with 3 Homeruns in 33 plate appearances?? Give you a hint, his last name rhymes with Avis…. So, now that trade comes back to bite the Mets in the ass. What a Jeff Wilpon move that was… You trade for a 36 year old part time DH and give up three pitchers too, when Vientos could have been tried. We all knew Davis led MLB in exit velocity and that had to manifest in better luck at some point… I understand not expecting your third basemen to both get hurt, but Darren Ruf… oh well. Mets mentality. Every year they overthink and underappreciate what they have… how New Yorker-ish…

I did forget to add that besides Marrero's career .194, Michael Perez in career .148. Add the two together and that gives you .342. Yippy.

Yep, the Davis trade is looking bad right now. I honestly wish the Mets were not so rigid.
How so? Let me in turn ask you a question.
Do you know there is a guy in AA who in his last 22 games has 29 hits and 17 walks, 46 times on base by hit and walk in 22 games, and can field too? Wyatt Young. Yep, only 450 pro at bats, I know, but this dude does what you want: gets on base a lot, and fields very well. I ask myself every day...why can't he perform at a major league level? They promoted him 3 levels to Syracuse in April when the team was in free fall, and in 19 games as a lead off hitter, he rescued them when he had a .446 OBP?
SO...why not Wyatt Young? Why veteran retreads?
Tom, only Atlanta is allowed to bring up their prospects from AA. It’s rule 162.11 in the rule book that says the Mets must trade for 36 year olds with subpar production and the Braves may actually give their kids a shot. I liked the Givens trade, I liked the Vogey trade, but the Ruf trade was stupid and remains that way. The New York Mets have always underappreciated their own and always overvalued “the veterans”.
Are Marrero and Perez this year's version of Cameron Maybin?
Remember Maybin? He hit worse than Cameron Diaz. 1 for 28 in 2021, and he sits at home, hoping the Mets will call him back so he can have a chance to record his first Mets RBI.
Funny - speaking of hit-averse CFs, so many fans were clamoring for the Mets to go after Jackie Bradley Jr in the off season before last. My brother was vehemently against it, saying he would NOT hit. He called it.
His on base % in 2021 was a desultory .236, but this year has surged up to an OBP of.258. But my, oh my, what a glove, huh? Glad he is someone else's "glove".
I JUST PREFER HITTERS. Not posers.
I can understand not bringing up Baty, but why not give Young a chance?
Tex,I know you watch the gams. Do you remember all the K’s on high fastballs? Do you remember all the chatter about how howJD hit th ball hard? And do you remember the lack of power (HRs). And most important you do remember that the guy had no position. Addition by subtraction!
I think the JDD trade had to happen. He needed a new environment to flourish, and I'm OK with that. If he had the same playing time with the Mets during that period, he would not have put up those numbers. Too much pressure to prove his way off the bench. My only lament there was that we gave away too many players for Ruf. A straight up 1-for-1 would have been OK.
As for all these minors guys, I envy the Braves' system and hope the Mets are headed in that direction. But it's not there yet. If you brought up Young, he would not perform like Grissom has or like Harris did. That day will come if they continue to improve the system.
