Tom Brennan - The Mack Report

THE MACK REPORT - SUNDAY, AUGUST 14

METS WIN!

Mack’s Tommy John surgery was a success.

Even better? It was his non-pitching arm, so he could be back on the mound at any time.

Terrible?  Luis Guillorme has been up 84 times this year with RISP and has just 10 RBIs in those PAs. Career .198 with RISP. And just 35 career RBI in 655 plate appearances. He does some things extremely well, but those stats are failures.

Jeff McNeil has just 1 error at 2B and 1 error in LF.  Who's the defensive wizard?

Would it be an error for me to suggest that there's a chance of a Gold Glove for Jeff?  He would be the first Squirrel ever to win such an award, which would be historic.

I read the following in a Sportscaster.com article:

“As per a USA Today list, Aroldis Chapman (five years, $86 million with the Yankees) and Kenley Jansen (five years, $80 million with the Dodgers) are the only relievers to secure deals worth more than $62 million. Among active relievers, only Raisel Iglesias ($58 million) and Liam Hendriks ($54 million) are playing through deals with more than $50 million overall. Hendriks’ four-year deal also includes the highest annual average value for active relievers at $18 million.”

- So, at this rate of 2022 halogen brilliance, how much will Edwin Diaz cost Steve Cohen this of season? 5 years, $100 million? Pay the man. Worth the dough.

METS:

deGrom vs. Nola, a nice match up, after a tough Friday loss, and 2 injuries, which have my brother Steve and I  wondering if there is a jinx on our Metsies. Jake was brilliant thru his 6, no runs allowed and 10 fanned, and Nola almost as good. Lugo a scoreless 7th, May a masterful 8th, then a shaky Diaz with 2 walks. Three steals and it is 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs, Castellanos at the dish. Two fouls.

He fanned the bum with a primo slider! 1-0 win, save to Diaz!  His 200th career save!

deGrom, it was said during the game last night, has a 0.55 WHIP over 17 starts, with the previous record for such a stretch being 0.64.  He also broke the MLB record of consecutive home starts allowing 2 runs or less, 22 straight games.

No one like Jake, Edwin, and Max.  What a trio.

Braves naturally were on their way to a doubleheader sweep, so the Mets were doubly fortunate to win this nail biter Saturday night.

Braves are 46-19 since June 1.  Since June 1, against teams not named "Mets", they are an absurd 44-13.  Can SOMEBODY beat them besides the Mets?

Jake (winner) now has 21 Ks in 11.2 IP over his last 2 games…against the torrid Braves-and Phillies, no less. Whoo Hoo!

MINORS:

SYRACUSE: 8-1 loss. Vientos 3 for 4. Quiet Alvarez night. 5 Syracuse errors.

BINGHAMTON: Down 3-1, Binghamton closed it to 3-2 on a 9th inning RBI single by Wyatt Young.  With Winaker and Young on base, up came Ronny Mo with 2 outs after a Fargas strikeout. He grounded out after a prolonged battle, and it ended 3-2.

BROOKLYN: Christian Scott threw 4 scoreless, but Nate Lavender had a rare bad night, allowing 4 runs in a 4-2 loss.  Peroza hit his 6th, and the suddenly red hot Matt Rudick went 2 for 4.  Last 4 games, he’s had 8 hits and 2 walks.  Nice work, Matt.

ST LUCIE: 8-1 win, with great pitching from rehabbing Josh Walker, who now is 1-0, 1.17 and 15 Ks in 7.2 IP. Time for him to face tougher hitters.

Paul Gervase, 12th rounder, has thrown 4 scoreless innings and fanned 9 in his first few outings. Sweet.  Raul Beracierta (.305) had 3 hits, including his 12th HR, and is in quite a hitting surge.

9th round 3B Chase Estes had 2 hits, including his first pro HR. AWESOME!

75th and 119th overall picks Nick Morabito and Jacob Reimer debuted in the FCL today. Undrafted Brad Malm started-at SS today.  Kids are all getting rolling. Rhylan Thomas had 2 of the team’s 3 hits, with Reimer notching the team’s other hit in a 4-2 loss.

ORELLANA ALERT!

Doug Orellana went 3.2 innings today, allowing just one hit while fanning NINE in the FCL Mets game. Awesome.

Juan Atencio’s rehab assignment in the FCL went well…1.1 IP, 3Ks. A name to watch.

DSL games? 2 losses, nothing really noteworthy.

Simon Juan, Jesus Baez and Willie Fanas combined to go 0 for 10. Yuk!

Hurry back, Mack!

Just watched that 9th - what pressure! GREAT Diaz slider to end it - a slider Seaver would have loved. Right on the black, at the knees.

On last night's game, Diaz really showed some heart when he didn't have his best stuff. Speaking of heart, mine was beating a mile a minute with two guys in scoring position and two out.

What is Buck's issue with McNeil in the lineup?! This is a guy who is in the top 5 in batting average who has proven he hits in the clutch, and he's frequently eighth. As Tom noted, Guillorme is not hitting in RISP situations, Escobar never delivered in the clutch, and all the rest of the guys he has used in the 6,7 positions don't have as many RBIs as Jeff. My put: bat him 5th - he will drive in runs, protect Alonso, and sprint around the bases when Vogelback or Ruf hits behind him.

Small recovery setback

Next Mack Report by me:

Tom,

I thought the Phillies reliever that they moved for Robertson looked better on paper than any pitcher in the Mets system. Do you concur?

I should add that while I remain hopeful about Allan, it's been a long time since he's pitched in a game situation. Team is quiet about his recovery post-TJ surgery. It's been a long time, no?

Mack we need off the IL pronto! Hang in there buddy. So if we pay to keep Jake and Mariano and for me Bassitt who goes? Also who gets added Sept 1? Tom kudos on being the super utility guy filling in for the Boss and my other question is: is Wyatt Young a legitimate option at 2nd base going forward?

Mack Ade said...

He was seen last month softly tossing on the back field but no word since.

Right now I have next organization starter to develop as Hamel.

Me?

1. Resign Nimmo

2. Resign Diaz

3. Activate option on Bassett

4. Offer Jake 10mil/yr more for 5 years

5. Add Vientos to 3B platoon

Gus, I did not even look at what Phillie gave up for Robertson. Ben Brown. Has pitched well, he is just Chicago's # 11 prospect, though. Pete the Crow is # 3. Some guy named Brennan Davis is # 1 - he is part Tom Brennan, part JD Davis. Scary.

Tom Brennan said...

Mack, I woder if they will go WAY over the cap in 2023 and count on fully seasoned, cheap prospects to start bringing them back down under it.

Tom Brennan said...

Allan will be allowed to go 5 innings in a start when he turns 30

Paul, McNeil had two stitches out in his thumb two days ago. He should be in the IL. Wonder how well he can grip the bat.

Tom, Guillorme needs to work on that, but I believe that can be fixed. One RBI every 8 plate appearances appears to be more of an accident than a failure.

Mack, I would not rush to re-sign Nimmo. His average is .255 and he is now in his 30’s - the backside of a baseball career.

Tom, that was Jimmy on the Robertson prospect. Hey man wrote that the Mets didn’t have a better pitching prospect they could offer. The better Mets prospect would be Matt Allen, and that was a non-starter. I wouldn’t even give up Jose Butto… for two months of this guy? Gimme a break.

Always thought Koufax was the best pitcher I ever saw,Seaver and Gibson were great, loved Pedro,Johnson and Clemens were right there. Now I’m thinking DeGrom.

Tom Brennan said...

Would you trade Butto for Realmuto, though? THATS AN UTO question. LOL

Tom Brennan said...

I wonder if, on a 10 inch mound, Koufax could have matched Jake? Of course, we’d have to cut Koufax’s innings by 40% to make it a fair comparison.

Win this series. Send the Phils packing.

Gary Seagren said...

Look with the talent that the Phils and Braves have at the major and minor league level we HAVE to spend to stay competitive or it's rebuild time and I don't see SC (after getting to the playoffs this year) wanting to do that. He's a winner and I'm sure he has no patience for a 3 to 4 year rebuild.
