The Mack Report

THE MACK REPORT - MONDAY, AUGUST 15

I (Tom B) am filling in today for Mack on this daily report; he is due to come off the IL on Thursday.  This daily report will be a shortie.

METS

Great, great game, wonderfully whacking Wheeler.

I love Whack-a-Zack, don't you?

Of course, no great game goes uninjured.

Luis Guillorme left with a tight groin.  May it untighten quickly.  He had ripped a 60 MPH liner for a run-scoring hit, moved to second on a walk, and then scored, limping, on a base hit.  Jeff McNeil stole a run on a brain-fart toss-in tho the infield by Castellanos - Jeff just took off.  He sure looked fired up when he beat the throw home with a head first slide.  "Lucky" teams score runs like that, huh?  LOL.

Chris Bassitt (10-7) and Trevor Williams (3.02 ERA in 66 IP)?  Outstanding.  Joely Rodriguez had (IMO) a bit of bad luck in the 9th, loading the bases, but Adam Ottavino threw GREAT pitches to Alec Bohm to strike him out, to conserve the 6-0 shutout.  Ottavino (2.18 ERA) is mucho supremo.  Another of the many great signings this year.

Herr Vogelbach lost a baseball somewhere well past the right field wall - we love our Danny Boy!  Are there any doubters left?

Danged Braves won again as the punchless Marlins fold like a cheap suit.  Just call them the Marlenes, they play like girls. (Can you still say that?)

Time to collide with the Braves once again.  I think they get Mighty Mad Max and Jake, so the Braves may end up feeling fried.

MINORS

SYRACUSE

Lost 2-0, David Peterson lost again but fanned 7 in 4 innings.  Bring him home!

Baty 2 hits, Vientos 1 hit, Alvarez 0 hits.

Montes de Oca scoreless IP, but walked 2 and no Ks.

BINGHAMTON

Lost 6-1, but with Wyatt (the Great) Young and Ronny Mauricio having 4 (2 apiece) of Binghamton's 6 hits.  Two glimmering lights on a talent-starved 40-67 team.  Wyatt the Guillorme clone could step right in for Luis if Luis the G Man has to go on the IL, but the Mets clearly won't go there.  Blankenhorn?  Vientos?  Baty?

BROOKLYN

6-5 Cyclones win on a 2 run pinch HR in the top of the 9th by Matt O'Neill.

Matt Rudick stay hot with 2 more hits, as the Rudick Renaissance continues.

Alex Ramirez drove in a pair. He is beyond compare.

Daison Acosta started the week 1-6, but he is now 3-6, and no doubt feeling good.

ST LUCIE

2022's 9th rounder Chase Estep is off to a great career start with St Lucie, going 6 for 18 with 4 walks and a HR.

Calvin Ziegler tossed 2 very nice innings - scoreless, 3 Ks. One walk, and still a little wild, but that's OK.

8-2 win, lots of offense but also 13 Ks by Lucie hitters.  They hit a lot, they fan a lot. Carlos Dominguez had 2 hits, including his 19th.

Omar DLS fanned 3 times.  Of course, he got a hit, too,  and stole his 60th base, tying Babe Ruth (sorry, wrong record).

Sixty steals is truly something, huh?  Congratulations.  Life begins at 70, Omar.

I asked Inspector Javert about Omar, and the Les Miz lawman said, "Once a thief, always a thief."

Well, Inspector, we love Omar, OUR favorite thief.  You ain't taking him in.

We love you readers, too.  Have a great day.

If Guillorme goes on IL, and Mets conclude Escobar cannot go every day, will Blistering Baty get called up? Funny, David Wright I believe debuted at 3B mid-season many years ago…in Atlanta.

It was great to see the Mets put pressure on the Phillies' D and finally get them to throw it around a bit, fulfilling Keith's prophesy.
It was funny to see the clips of the Philly broadcast team complaining that the Mets got lucky with a bunch of 60mph hits. Does Spencer Strider broadcast Phils' games in his spare time?
But above all, I think that Philadelphia really gave the Mets a challenge this weekend by playing and pitching very well. The Mets responded like a playoff team, doing what they had to do to take another series.

Baty has been on a tear, but my guess is that Vientos gets the shot if Guillorme fails his MRI today.

It was Hall with the lazy toss, not Castellanos.

Schwarber missed the series with injury. Sorry Kyle.

Mike Puma tweets of Brett Baty, not Mark Vientos.

I am a bit concerned for today’s game. Corasco with reverse splits against a righty heavy lineup and much better at home than on the road, but I’d drop a few bunt in the first in ing to get into Strider’s head.

Hope they have additional security.

I think Baty gets called up before Vientos. The better all around player.

Not only better, but we're looking for a lefty bat to platoon with EE.

Tom Brennan said...

Bill, Escobar can only hit lefty - he hit lefty against Brad Hand - if he is not going on IL, and they intend to play him against righty pitchers, Vientos against lefties might make more sense right now than Baty.

Vientos against lefties this year? Ferocious:

.340/.407/.755 with 11 HRs, 32 RBIs in 94 at bats.

Just got message back from one my last Mets insiders.

Said it has been determine that Vientos continued poor showing defensively prevents him from consideration at third for Mets

Tom where are you now slotting Alvarez? Is Baty now #1. How about a Vientos/Baty 3rd base platoon or are we into that crazy start his clock thing? By the way Tom I'd follow you anywhere great stuff as always.

Tom Brennan said...

Gary, I'd platoon Vientos and Baty in a heartbeat. Vientos kills lefties, Baty is completely on fire, and neither is a great fielder, but if Luis and Escobar go on IL, I'd promote them both and keep my fingers crossed while in the field.

Or just call up Luis clone Wyatt Young along with Baty.

You forgot your closer Luis-Dryfess

If we promote anyone, I believe that our 40-man is full, so anyone not on it would have to "bump" someone else. That's a significant factor in the choice.

That said, Id like to have someone on the ML roster who will serve as our emergency Catcher. In the event we need to PH/PR for McCann or Nido, and the other is injured, it's not a spot where we can just move anyone in there.

I think Luis is our designated EC, so if he's on the IL, who replaces him in that role?
As Casey said, "if you don't have a Catcher you're going to have a lot of Passed Balls".

Inspector Dreyfus indeed

Buck is old school. Defense matters. No way is Vientos playing 3B on his team.
