RICHMOND, VA – Tyler Fitzgerald hit two home runs and drove in three runs leading the Richmond Flying Squirrels past the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 5-1 on Saturday night at The Diamond.
Fitzgerald put the Squirrels on the board with a solo home run in the first off Alex Valverde (1-6) to put Richmond ahead 1-0. Binghamton (14-29, 42-70) would tie the game in the top of the second as Jeremy Vasquez hit an RBI single to left that scored Carlos Cortes.
In the fourth, Richmond (15-28, 55-57) took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly from Carter Aldrete. Later in the frame, Fitzgerald hit an RBI double to left that made it 4-1 Squirrels, capping off a three-run frame.
In the seventh, Fitzgerald hit an inside the park home run to center that Brandon McIlwain made a valiant effort to make a diving catch on. The ball dropped though and rolled all the way to the wall as Fitzgerald rounded the bases for his second homer of the night and 21st of the season. Fitzgerald finished 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Valverde was charged with four runs on five hits over three and two thirds innings in the loss. Joe Zanghi struck out six over two innings of work.
The two teams close out their season series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 1:35 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 1:20 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Can’t keep Wyatt Young off the bases. Another hit and walk last night.
