The Future Of: OF

The Future Of: Outfield

This is more simply than third base.

The Mets have two major league, every day, A-rated, top-dawg, your-the-man, outfielders in their organization; Carlos Beltran and Fernando Martinez.

Period.

If you’d like, I could spend an hour here saying nice things about Ryan Church, Gary Sheffield, Fernando Tatis, D.J. Wabick, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Sean Ratliff, and Cesar Puello, but the bottom line is, currently, the only projected every day major league outfielders in the organization are already in Queens.

It is more than a coincidence that the Mets drafted mucho outfielders this week, but none of these kids, nor, in my opinion, none of the guys in the system, are currently projected to start in Queens.

I’m not saying that something can develop. Ratliff looks great in A-Ball,,, Puello looked great last year in rookie ball… and a couple of the draft picks look intriguing.

No, the Mets will limp through this season, and try to find someone through a trade or free agency to clear these positions up.

The Future: 2010-2011:
LF: Fernando Martinez
CF: Carlos Beltran
RF: Undetermined
2012:
LF: undetermined
CF: Fernando Martinez
RF: undetermined
