Niesen Loses AA Debut 5-1 at Trenton

Eric Niesen gave up five runs in five innings and the Thunder used four pitchers to hold Binghamton down in Trenton’s 5-1 win in Game 2 of a day-night doubleheader at Waterfront Park Saturday night. Carl Loadenthal enjoyed a two-hit performance including a double to lead the offensive attack.

After Niesen struck out Chris Malec and Edwar Gonzalez looking to start the second, he hit Kyle Anson with a pitch and walked Kevin Smith to lead to Marcos Vechionacci. Vecchionacci then smashed a Niesen offering over the right-field wall to put Trenton (32-29) in front 3-0 early.

Binghamton (25-36) answered with its only run in the top of the third as D.J. Wabick singled in Emmanuel Garcia with one out against starter Josh Schmidt. Schmidt lasted just three innings allowing one run and tied a season high with five strikeouts.

The Thunder cushioned their lead with a solo homer from Eduardo Nunez in the third and with a single run in the fifth which scored on a Reegie Corona doubled and a Ruben Tejada error making it 5-1.

Niesen allowed five runs on three hits and walked three to take the loss in his AA debut. Kevin Whelan was credited for the win as he threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for his second win.

The finale of the four-game set is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The Thunder will throw LHP Wilkin De La Rosa (3-3, 3.66) for his eighth start of the season and the B-Mets have yet to name a starter. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 with the radio broadcast beginning at 12:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
