Minors Stuff

New Met:

Round 5, Damien Magnifico, RHP, North Mesquite HS (Texas): At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Magnifico can bring it to the tune of 95 mph. His command and his secondary pitches -- namely, a curveball -- are still raw.

Round 6, David Buchanan, RHP, Chipola JC (Ga.): Buchanan is another hard thrower, reaching 96 mph on the radar gun with a four-seamer. He still needs to develop some consistency with his delivery.

Round 7, Darin Gorski, LHP, Kutztown University (Pa.): Gorski is known for his feel on the mound, as his stuff isn't electric. He maxes out at about 90 mph with his fastball, and his curveball is average at best.

Round 8, John Freeman, C, McNeese State: A left-handed-hitting catcher, Freeman was on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List as a junior this season for the Cowboys.

Round 9, Jeffrey Glenn, C, Winter Haven HS (Fla.) Glenn, a high school catcher, hails from the same area as the Mets' third-round pick, shortstop Robert Shields.

Round 10, Nick Santomauro, OF, Dartmouth: Santomauro, originally from New Jersey, was the Ivy League Player of the Year this season as a junior, hitting .377 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs.

B-Mets:

Jose Coronado went 3-4 with three RBI and Nick Evans smacked his second home run of the season as Binghamton tied a season-high with 10 runs in a 10-7 victory over Harrisburg at NYSEG Stadium Wednesday night. Coronado, Josh Thole, and Shawn Bowman all collected three-hit games.

Binghamton grabbed the lead in the fourth off Senators’ starter Justin Jones when three runs came across the plate. Carl Loadenthal reached with one-out on a throwing error by second baseman Leonard Davis. After an Eric Brown sacrifice Coronado singled to left to score Loadenthal from second. Evans then crushed a two-run home run to left-centerfield to give the B-Mets a 5-2 lead.

The Senators got one back in the top of the sixth off Brown on a solo home run by Edgardo Baez. It was the fifth of the season for him. Harrisburg then cut the score to 5-4 in the seventh after back-to-back doubles by Marvin Lowrance and pinch-hitter Matt Whitney.

An insurance run came across for the B-Mets in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Loadenthal and then Binghamton (24-33) added four more runs in the eighth off Senators’ reliever Jack Spradlin. Coronado led off with a walk and Evans reached on a throwing error by Spradlin. Thole then loaded the bases by singling and Josh Petersen followed by driving in Coronado with a sacrifice fly to center. Shawn Bowman then doubled scoring Evans and Thole and Ruben Tejada finished off the scoring by doubling in Bowman on a hard hit ball off the wall in left to make it 10-4.

Harrisburg (19-36) knocked in three in the ninth off Edgar Ramirez to yield the final score of 10-7. Roy Merritt was called upon to get the B-Mets out of the jam and record the final out. He struck out Davis to pin down his eleventh save of the season and his first since May 11.

Coronado provided the B-Mets with their first runs of the series in the bottom of the second after Bowman led the inning off with a single and Loadenthal reached on a one-out walk by Jones. After Brown sacrificed the runners to second and third Coronado drove them in with a line-drive single which dropped in front of a diving Baez in centerfield.

Brown picked up his fourth win, his first in a start, going 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. He also tied a season high with six strikeouts.

Gnats:

A wild pitch from Rome’s Clayton McMillan in the seventh allowed Savannah’s Stefan Welch to score the go-ahead run and end a five-game losing streak as the Sand Gnats hung on for a, 4-3, victory Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The Gnats loaded the bases in the seventh inning against reliever Yeliar Castro, who struggled with his command all evening as he committed five walks in two innings. Welch scored on the first ball thrown from McMillan, which was high and outside. It was Welch’s second run of the game and it was his RBI double that was part of the two-run, game-tying rally for Savannah in the fifth.

Sand Gnats catcher Jean Luc Blaquiere led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home on Welch’s double. The Alice Springs, Aus. native scored on a sacrifice fly from Jefry Marte to tie the score at three. In his last two games, Welch is 3-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored.

Rome scored an unearned run in the first and third innings against Savannah starter Elvin Ramirez, whose two throwing errors paved the way for the Braves to take the lead. Rome added their third run on a Calvin Culver solo home run in the fourth.

Josh Stinson (2-2) threw three scoreless innings for the win for the Gnats while Castro (2-3) takes the loss after loading the bases for the Gnats in the seventh. Rhiner Cruz pitched a perfect ninth for his team-leading sixth save.
