The Herd:

Hitting coach demoted. New hitting coach promoted. Woebegone team’s offense has biggest eruption of the season.

The Buffalo Bisons can’t pawn off Thursday’s 13-5 pounding of the Durham Bulls in Coca-Cola Field as a coincidence.

In the first game after Luis Natera was farmed by the New York Mets to Double-A Binghamton and Bill Masse sent up from Bingo to replace him, the Bisons posted season highs in runs and hits (15). And they hardly resembled the team that entered the game batting .228 thus far in this miserable season.

“I don’t think [the coaching change] was the reason it happened,” insisted center fielder Cory Sullivan, who posted just the second four-hit game of the season by a Buffalo batter. Box score
“The law of averages would say we’re going to do that a lot more often. Unfortunately for the first two months, somebody took the blame. I think it fell on the players’ shoulders.”
Manager Ken Oberkfell said he was “shocked” to get the call on the moves Wednesday from Mets vice president Tony Bernazard.

B-Mets:

Binghamton suffered their largest defeat of the season and gave up a season-high 16 runs in a 16-2 loss to Harrisburg at NYSEG Stadium Thursday in a game that was called in the eighth due to wet grounds. Jose Coronado, Emmanuel Garcia, D.J. Wabick and Ruben Tejada all registered two-hits for the B-Mets.

The Senators jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off B-Mets starter Jenrry Mejia by scoring two-unearned runs in the second. Lucas Duda and Tejada made errors in the inning.

Coronado cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on a single to centerfield that scored Garcia from second. Garcia doubled to right to put himself in scoring position.

In the fifth Nick Abel came on to relieve Mejia and gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in the inning. Ofilio Castro, who went 4-5 with four RBI’s, had a two-run single in the frame to make it 6-1.

Harrisburg (20-36) blew the game wide open in the sixth off Abel by stringing together four hits. Matt Whitney hit an RBI double and Marvin Lowrance jacked his ninth home run of the season, a three-run shot, to make it 10-1.

Abel gave up a Binghamton season-high in hits allowed for a reliever with 11 and earned runs with 10 in his 2.1 innings of work. Six runs came across in the seventh to tie a season-high for runs allowed in an inning. Javy Herrera’s two-run single off Stephen Clyne made the score 16-1.

Binghamton (24-34) scored a run in the seventh to yield the final score of 16-2. Matt Watson, who recently arrived from Buffalo, singled to lead off the inning and scored on Nick Evans’ double.

Erik Arnesen went six innings, giving up one run on eight hits for his third win of the year. Jenrry Mejia took his first loss of the season in his second start, going four innings, giving up four hits and four runs. Only two of the runs were earned, however.

Gnats:

Amidst the rain and lighting at Historic Grayson Stadium Thursday night the Sand Gnats were able to squeak out another one-run victory as they dropped the Rome Braves, 3-2, in front of 2,028. Michael Powers (1-0) notched the win while Rhiner Cruz saved his second game in as many days for his seventh save of the season.

Rain stopped Thursday night’s game for just over an hour and really proved to be a break point in how the game played out. Savannah scored both its runs prior to the delay and led, 2-0, heading into it. Starter Jeurys Familia was having one of his best starts of the year before the skies opened up and forced a premature end to his outing. The righty threw six innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts.

After the delay, Powers came in with Calvin Culver batting and Gerry Rodriguez on first with no one out. Powers retired Culver and allowed a single to Moody to set up a situation with runners at the corners and Samuel Sime at the plate. Sime proceeded to roll a potential double play ball to the left side but an errant throw on the backend by Josh Satin allowed Rodriguez to score on the play and bring Rome within one.

In the top of the eighth Jahdiel Santamaria doubled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single by Braeden Schlehuber to tie it.

With the game tied, the Gnats answered in the eighth when Ralph Henriquez singled with Satin at second and Wilmer Flores at first. The throw home from left field was cutoff and Satin scored the go-ahead run.
