St. Lucie wins, 7-5

The Mets won 7-5.

P Nick Carr has appeared in 12 games so far this season, all in relief, and has put up some decent numbers (1-2, 2.16, 32Ks/33.1 IP). Last year, he was a starter in the Lucy rotation, and easily was tagged as the hard luck kid, getting very little support. He ended his Lucy record at 2-10, 5.70, and tacked on another 1-2, 3.33 for Savannah. Well, the Mets decided to give him another shot at the rotation Saturday night, which didn’t turn out that well. Carr gave up four runs in the bottom of the second.

2B Greg Veloz is starting to look much better at the plate and is returning to the effective leadoff hitter he has been most of his young Mets career. In Jose Reyes fashion, Veloz singled in the first, stole second, got to third on a ground out, and scored on an error.

Then, Lucy struck for six runs in 3rd inning, which included a grand slam by Brahiam
Maldonado, (.217) his 6th of the year. I really loved Maldo when I first saw him in Savannah and had him on my prospect list well before anyone else; however, in his case, the others have been right so far. Very streaky hitter who I’ve seen hit a 400+ homer on the first game he played for the Gnats.

Carr got the win; however, it was interesting that Dylan Owen pitched the last four innings in relief. Hello, long man.
