Boy, I told you in the
off season that it was going to fun as hell writing about the Mets pitching
prospects, but even I didn’t think Zack Wheeler and
Matt Harvey were going to pitch this way at this
point of the season.
Harvey was remarkable –
for 5 innings… 106 pitches (60 strikes)… just ran out of gas…4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1
BB, 2 K… this is what Dillon Gee used to say is “one
of those” outings. Gee told me that, out of ten starts, two are great, two suck
and the other six are “one of those that you have to work through”.
Harvey: “I give all the
credit because they made all the plays”
Nelson
Figueroa in for relief… what?
Ben Wagner -
Josh Satin is 8-for-18 (.444) the past six games, while drawing 9
walks.
Jesus, this is getting
so redundant… El Ramirez: 1.2 more scoreless innings… still 0.00 ERA
Metsmerized:
Elvin Ramirez (AAA) – The smokin’ hot start to the season for Ramirez
already has gotten him a promotion from AA Binghamton to AAA Buffalo a few days
ago. Continued success will land him on the same conveyor belt headed towards
Citifield as his teammates listed above. What got him the AAA promotion? Here’s
the numbers he put up with Bingo in April: 0-1 with a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings, 7
hits, 2 runs, 7 BB’s, 16 K’s, a BAA of .152, and a WHIP of 1.08. This 6’3″
24-year-old right-hander has some nasty stuff, and unlike the three relievers above
who are veteran players, Ramirez is actually a prospect.
Ben Wagner -
Matt Harvey combined to win more games (17) than any 2010 1st-rounder
AA-Binghamton:
Jenrry Mejia - 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. 75
pitches (44 Ks) – don’t over study this kid’s stats. He’s a proven talent that
is building up arm strength. The only way you can do this is play in game time
conditions. Extended camp games a woosy games against your team buddies.
Doesn’t work. Give him 3-4 more games in Binghamton and then the Mets will
decide wherer: Queens rotation, Queens, pen, or Buffalo rotation.
The Matt den Dekker conundrum continues… 3-5, .311, and
49-Ks in 183-ABs. You have to trust me here folks. The only way guys with stats
like this (Lucas Duda, Kirk Nieuwenhuis) get to
the Bigs is because of team injuries. He has to cut down the Ks if he
wants the big check.
Is Eric Campbell a viable alternative at 1B? Stat line
this year: .318/.435/.477/.912, and ZERO ERRORS…
Gonzalez Germen pitched three innings in
relief… hmm…
A+ - St. Lucie: -
In case you hadn't heard, Wilmer
Flores is on a tear. The former top overall prospect in the Mets system
is currently batting .330 in May with an OPS well over .900 (.310/.347/.497
overall). And the key has been the development of his power game. He's currently
sitting at seven home runs through just 42 games for St. Lucie. For reference
his career high is 11 in 133 games back in 2010. Interestingly enough, Flores
is rapidly approaching his 1000th career at bat with the Hi-A St. Lucie Mets, a
mark that few top prospects hit at any one level. Now don't get me wrong, this
is certainly not a damning bit of information; players develop at all different
rates (hell, look at Bryan LaHair who logged over 2500 ab's at Triple-A) and
Flores himself is still just 20 years old.
Boy, it is so
frustrating following Cory Vaughn. He’s hot
again (10th home run of the season) which means we should all write
wonderful things about him, right? Well, he’s just going to piss us off down
the road and get cold again. Such talent that remains unharnessed.
SP Yohan Almonte (4.75) scrambled through this one…
5.2-IP, 8-H, 1-R, 4-K, 1-BB, 1-HR… stayed in
trouble all night but came out clean as a whistle… (what the hell does that
mean?)…
3B Wilmer Flores continues
to push Jenfry Marte – 3-5, 3.15…
A – Savannah:
Brian
Harrison got the day off and Aderln Rodriguez played
1B… he hit his 6th home run of the season…
Errors did SP Tyler Pill (7.1-IP, 0-ER, 2-R,
5-K, 0.BB, 1.93) in… four tonight including A-Rod’s 10th of the
season ( doesn’t he make enough of them on third?)
Really getting sick of
the sloppy play…
I guess hitting .500
just isn’t good enough for RF Gilbert Gomez. 3-4 tonight… .571…
I said on:
7-7-11: - Mets outfield
prospect Gilbert Gomez is beginning to make his
mark professionally. The 19-year old went 3-4, 1-double, 2-RBI in yesterday’s
suspended GCL game and has now raised his 2011 BA to .308. He was signed in
2008 as a heralded 16-year old, out of the Dominican Republic, and has so far
taken baby steps through the organization… 2009: DSL - .268, 2010: GCL - .229. Pop is still
projected here, though he has five doubles this year and is sporting his
highest (.422) slugging percentage in his career.
