Romero’s Drive Sours B-Mets Series Finale, 6-4



NEWBRITAIN, CT – Deibinson Romero’s two-run homer in the eighth inning broke a tiegame and helped lead the New Britain Rock Cats past the Binghamton Mets by a6-4 score Thursday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The loss pushed Binghamtona game under .500 and capped a 3-4 roadtrip for the club.

Withthe game tied at four in the decisive inning, B-Mets pitcher Gonzalez Germenissued a two-out walk to Matt Rizzotti. The righty paid for the free pass asRomero ripped a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for his fourth home run ofthe season. The Rock Cats scored five of their six runs in the game with twoouts.

Ina game that started in the morning, the Rock Cats wasted no time to grab theearly lead against B-Mets starter Jenrry Mejia. In his second start of the yearwith the B-Mets, Mejia allowed a leadoff single to Estarlin De Los Santos. Theshortstop stole second and scored on Chris Herrmann’s single to center. Rizzottikicked the lead to three by hammering a two-run homer to center.

Binghamtongot on the board in the third against starter B.J. Hermsen. Pedro Zapatasingled to right and put himself in scoring position by swiping second, histeam-leading ninth stolen base of the year. He advanced to third on Matt denDekker’s single and scored on a passed ball by Herrmann.

Afterthe Rock Cats plated a run in the third on an RBI double from Chris Colabello,the B-Mets began to chip away at the deficit. Reese Havens doubled with one outin the fourth and scored on an Eric Campbell’s single to right. They addedanother run in the fifth on a single by Raul Reyes.

DenDekker finally erased the deficit in the seventh. The center fielder launched a1-2 offering from Hermsen over the right field fence to tie the game with histeam-leading sixth homer of the season.

Thedrive took Jenrry Mejia off the hook. The righty allowed four runs on five hitsand struck out five over five innings. Germen (1-3) took over in the sixth andtossed two shutout innings before surrendering Romero’s drive in the eighth. Helost his second straight game.

RockCats starter Hermsen scattered ten hits in a no-decision. The righty allowedfour runs (three earned) and struck out three over seven innings of work.Southpaw Caleb Thielbar (2-0) put up a perfect eighth and closed out thevictory with a shutout ninth.

TheB-Mets (22-23) head home to start a four-game series against the New HampshireFisher Cats Friday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the mound forBinghamton against RHP Joel Carreno. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-gameshow begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
