McHugh Dazzles, B-Mets Secure Split, 6-2


BINGHAMTON,NY – Collin McHugh struck out a season-high eight New Hampshire Fisher Cats andthe B-Mets scored five runs in the sixth inning to earn a 6-2 win Mondayafternoon at NYSEG Stadium. McHugh allowed just two runs over eight innings,his longest performance of the season.

Afterfacing one over the minimum through three, McHugh hit a speed bump in thefourth. Two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases, and Kevin Howarddelivered with an RBI single to give the Fisher Cats the lead. Brad Glennripped a sac fly to center to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile,the B-Mets’ offense was stymied by New Hampshire starter Deck McGuire for morethan half the game. The righty retired the first 15 B-Mets he faced beforethings unraveled in the sixth.

McGuirehit Reese Havens to start the inning and walked Kai Gronauer to put two aboard.A sac bunt set the table for Sean Kazmar who broke up the no-hitter and got Binghamtonon the board with a single to the left side. Josh Rodriguez tied the game andended McGuire’s day with a run-scoring single to right.

AaronLoup entered and struggled with his command. The lefty hit Reyes with a pitchto load the bases and surrendered an RBI single to Jefry Marte that gave theB-Mets a 3-2 lead. Loup capped his day by issuing consecutive bases-loadedwalks to Juan Lagares and Reese Havens. Ronald Uviedo entered and extinguishedthe flames by striking out Gronauer.

McHugh(5-3) easily shook off his difficult fourth inning and capped his day with fourshutout frames, facing just one over the minimum. Excluding the fourth, McHughfaced no more than four batters in any inning. The righty gave up five hits andwalked only one in the win.

TheB-Mets added their final run on a single by Gronauer in the eighth and lookedto Adrian Rosario in the ninth. The righty walked two, but induced Brad Glennto line into a game-ending double play to post a scoreless frame. McGuire (2-5)suffered his third loss against the B-Mets.

TheB-Mets (24-25) head south to take on the Reading Phillies in a three-gameseries that starts Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Miguel Batista takes the moundin a rehab start for the B-Mets against RHP Julio Rodriguez. The HorizonsFederal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
