Seventh Inning Dooms B-Mets in 3-0 Loss
NEWBRITAIN, CT – The New Britain Rock Cats packed all their offense into theseventh inning to hand the Binghamton Mets a 3-0 loss at New Britain Stadium onTuesday night. It was Binghamton’s sixth shutout loss of the season.
Thestarters matched zeroes through the first six innings. In his team-leadingninth start of the year, B-Mets starter Collin McHugh battled through sixshutout innings, scattering seven hits along the way. New Britain start LoganDarnell was just as good. The lefty allowed seven hits but navigated throughseven innings without allowing a run.
McHugh’sstart took a turn for the worse in the seventh. The righty had his stretch ofthirteen-straight scoreless innings snapped on his first pitch of the inning.Rock Cats right fielder Evan Bigley ripped a solo home run to left to give NewBritain a 1-0 lead.
Thingsheated up when McHugh inadvertently hit Nate Hanson with his next pitch. Incorrectlyinterpreting the hit batsman as intentional, home plate umpire Joey Amaralejected McHugh from the game and the B-Mets were forced to unexpectedly summonBrad Holt from the bullpen.
TheRock Cats greeted Holt with two bunt singles to load the bases. Chris Herrmannextended New Britain’s lead with a two-run double to left; his fourth hit ofthe game and eighth of the series. The Rock Cats appeared to score their fourthrun of the inning on sac fly by Deibinson Romero, but runner Estarlin De LosSantos was ruled out on appeal for leaving third early.
Trailing3-0, the B-Mets threatened in the eighth against reliever Luis Perdomo. Singlesby Josh Rodriguez and Eric Campbell and a walk to Jefry Marte loaded the bases.The veteran righty escaped harm by inducing Raul Reyes to fly out to end theinning.
BobbyLanigan pitched the ninth and navigated around a one-out walk to collect histhird save of the season. Darnell (5-2) earned his team-leading fifth win andMcHugh (4-3) was saddled with his third loss.
