GNATS FLIP SCRIPTDEFEAT DOGS 5-3
Savannah, GA - Tuesday’sgame, in which the Gnats beat the Charleston RiverDogs 5-3, played out like atwisted reprise of Monday’s game. Monday, the Charleston came from behind tobeat the Gnats 5-3 in 11 innings. Tuesday, the Gnats (27-17) scored three inthe bottom of the eighth inning to grab the win by the same score, and moveback within three games of the first-place RiverDogs (30-13).
Down 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, SS TJ Rivera and 3B Aderlin Rodriguez each drew walks to put the tying and go-aheadruns on base. With two outs, 1B BrianHarrison, who has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, roped a singleinto leftfield to drive home Rivera with the tying run. RF Charley Thurber followed by ripping a triple up the right-centerfield gap to score Rodriguez and Harrison for a 5-3 lead.
Thurber, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk,was also responsible for the first Gnats’ run of the night. In the secondinning, he doubled, advanced to third on ‘Dogs’ CF Mason Williams’ fielding error and scored on a wild pitch to putthe Gnats in front 1-0. In the fourth, Rodriguez lined an RBI single into leftto drive home Rivera for a 2-0 lead.
The RiverDogs bounced back to take the lead with a three-run topof the sixth against Savannah reliever RandyFontanez. 2B Angelo Gumbsdoubled to start the rally, and scored on 1B Raymond Nunez’s single into center to make the score 2-1. Twobatters later, SS Cito Culver’striple over the head of CF Gilbert Gomezdrove home two runs for a 3-2 Charleston advantage.
Savannah reliever ChasenBradford worked a scoreless seventh and eighth innings with two strikeoutsfor his first Savannah win. LHP TJ Chismset down the ‘Dogs 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.
Savannah starter AlexPanteliodis fought his way through four innings in which he allowed fivehits and three walks, but no runs.
