Daily Mets Minors Report – 7-3-12

Date: 7-3-12

MLB - Mets:

Sandy Alderson to San Francisco: "Come at me, bro."

AAA – Buffalo:

The Bisons have activated LHP Chuck James off the disabled list. LHP Mark Cohoon has been transferred to Double-A Binghamton.

Collin McHugh takes the mound tonight for his fourth start with the Bisons. The righty is coming off a no-decision in his only start at Coca-Cola Field this season, June 28 against Louisville (4.0IP, 2ER, 4K). Overall, he is 0-2 with a 7.07 ERA and 15K in 14.0 innings of work for the Herd.

LHP Josh Edgin has not allowed a run in his last seven games (7.1IP, 4H, 9K)...

Tonight

Look, I know most of the people that write about the Mets minor league teams make a big deal when they either win or don’t. Frankly, I could care less. I’m just evaluating the few players on each team that have either shown they have the talent to excel in the majors, or continue to have a ceiling/age that is projectable.

Take the example of SP Collin McHugh. Does he stand a chance to make the Mets rotation? Probably not and would take quite a few injuries. Is he talented enough to pitch in the majors? Yes, easily projectable as an SP5. Do we write about him. Yes, especially around trade time J

Collin went 8.1-IP, 97-64, 10-K, 2-BB. This Is what we call a quality start. Hopefully, there were lots of scouts there, looking past his 5.31 AAA ERA.

RP Jenrry Mejia still struggles with a nightly 9.00 ERA. No walks , but only one strikeout. 27-19.

I’m not sure how happy the rest of the team was when RF Raul Reyes (.250) singled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth. Next thing you know was a delay when everyone could have been home to check their TIVO. That’s okay. 2B Jordany “Wait For 100 More Pictures of my Single on Facebook” Valdespin, singled in Reyes and game, set, and match.

AA-Binghamton:

LHP Darin Gorski (5-4, 4.14) makes his 14th start of the season and second against the Curve. Gorski supplied a quality start, but took the no-decision in his last appearance versus the Bowie Baysox on June 28. The southpaw allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings, but the Baysox posted four runs against the B-Mets bullpen to earn an 8-6 win. In Gorski’s first start against the Curve on June 16, he allowed six runs and matched a season-high by allowing ten hits in a loss. It was Gorski’s only loss in the month of June. Selected in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, Gorski is in his first season with the B-Mets.

RHP Brandon Cumpton (8-6, 3.21) takes the mound for his 16th start and second versus the B-Mets. The righty has factored into the decision in all but one his starts  and thrown at least five innings thirteen times. The Georgia native defeated the Harrisburg Senators in his last start with six shutout innings. He struck out four and allowed just three hits. Cumpton suffered the loss in his first start against the B-Mets on June 15, Binghamton’s only win against Altoona this season. He allowed four runs and matched a season-high with seven hits allowed in 5.1 innings. Selected in the 9th round of the 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech, he is in his first year with the Curve.

Tonight

Wilmer Flores was back playing 2B again… 0-3, .360, and n0 errors.

RF Juan Lagares made his 12th stolen base in 82 games.

A+ - St. Lucie: -

Tonight

This is not a good time for SP Yohan Almonte to have another bad start. The season’s got less games left than played and Michael Fulmer is waiting for an opening. Tonight was from hunger: 4.0-IP, 8-H, 8-ER, 6.48. Last three outings: 11.1-IP… 24 runs.

A – Savannah:

Tonight

This was a stinker…

First, two more errors including 3B Aderlin Rodriguez’ (.271) 16th. Come on…

Recent draft pick, 3B Matt Reynolds (.286) is holding his own at A-ball. Two more hits tonight.

A-Low – Brooklyn:

Tonight

It’s hard not to laugh at CF Brandon Nimmo’s stat line. He came into tonight’s game sporting: .184/.365/.286/.651. So, what does he do tonight? He goes hitless but generates two RBIs…

1B Jayce Boyd (.444) had another double… SS Philip Evans (.266) also doubled while LF Stefan Sabol (.348) had three hits.

Rookie – Kingsport:

Tonight… postponed
