Jamestown Sweeps Brooklyn

The Cyclones took a one run lead into the eighth inning on Monday, but got themselves in a jam as they were unable to escape a 5-2 defeat and three-game sweep by Jamestown.

Brooklyn starting pitcher Hansel Robles got second baseman Yefri Perez to fly out to center field in the top of the first to begin the game. After that first hitter, the ball did not leave the infield while the Jammers were at bat through the first 4.1 innings.

Robles walked left fielder Jesus Solorzano with two outs in the second before retiring the next eight batters in order. It wasn’t until the fifth that the Jammers got their first hit – a one-out single up the middle off the bat of Solorzano.

In the sixth frame, Jamestown was able to score their first run off Robles on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Pedro Mendoza. Center fielder Juancito Martinez began the inning, reaching first on a bunt single and then stole second. He advanced to third when Perez singled and then came home when Mendoza put the ball in play.

That run knocked Robles from the game. He went 5.1 innings, allowing just the one earned run off three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Brooklyn bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth, as the Cyclones put two runs on the board to take a 2-1 lead. Jamestown reliever Brian Ellington walked second baseman Juan Gamboa to begin the inning. Center fielder Brandon Nimmo then reached base for his second time that night with a single up the middle. Ellington threw a wild pitch while Phillip Evans was at bat and both base runners moved into scoring position. A single by Evans then allowed both Gamboa and Nimmo to cross the plate.

But, the Jammers took the lead in the top of the eighth. After right fielder Cameron Flynn flied out, Martinez was hit by a pitch by Cyclones reliever Matt Bowman. Martinez then stole second. Three consecutive Jamestown hits allowed two runs to score. Perez and DH Viosergy Rosa both collected an RBI.

Jamestown went on to score a couple of insurance run in the ninth off Tim Peterson. Shortstop Rony Peralta led off with a double and was plated on an RBI single by Martinez. Flynn, who also singled, later scored on a single by Perez.

Jamestown reliever Brian Ellington earned the win, having thrown 2.0 innings. He allowed two earned runs off two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Nick Wittgren picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching the final 1.2 frames.
