TONIGHT: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies and the Reading Fightin Phils play a doubleheader. One of the games is a makeup from last Wednesday when their game at Binghamton was postponed due to inclement weather.

LAST TIME OUT: The Rumble Ponies won the series opener 3-2 Monday night. RHP Tommy Wilson tossed six scoreless innings, allowed two hits and struck out two on 68 pitches. It was his second straight start in which he tossed six scoreless innings. The Ponies scored two runs in the sixth on a Quinn Brodey solo homer and a Patrick Mazeika RBI single. Binghamton added another run in the eighth on a Gavin Cecchini RBI double. This was the Ponies’ first win over the Fightins this season.

BRODEY HOMERS IN CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED:  With his leadoff home run in the sixth inning Monday night, Quinn Brodey has now homered in each of his last two games. He belted his first homer of the season on Saturday night. The lefty has 10 RBI on the season and has driven in a run in three of his last four games.

MAZEIKA RANKS THIRD IN RBI: Patrick Mazeika drove in his 52nd run of the season with an RBI single in the top of the sixth Monday night. Mazeika leads the team and sits third in the Eastern League in this category. Reading’s Darick Hall leads the league with 58 RBI.

CECCHINI COMES THROUGH AGAIN: Gavin Cecchini has driven in a run in each of the last three games. He belted an RBI double in the eighth inning Monday night. Cecchini has 13 RBI since joining Binghamton on June 26.

LEE, JANNIS TO START TONIGHT: RHP Zach Lee will start for Binghamton in game one tonight. He has not allowed an earned run in either of his last two starts. With the Rumble Ponies, Lee is 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA. Righty Mickey Jannis takes the mound in game two. He is returning to the Ponies after making his second start of the year with Syracuse (AAA). Jannis holds the Binghamton franchise record for wins, starts, innings pitched and strikeouts.

WINNING ON THE ROAD:  In their last 10 games away from home, the Ponies are 8-2. They  are in the middle of playing 13 of 15 games on the road.

KRIZAN NAMED PLAYER OF WEEK: Jason Krizan was named the EL  Player of the Week for July 15-21. He hit .462 (12-26) with five doubles, two home runs, and six RBI. Krizan reached base in all six games he played in during the week.

COMING UP: The Rumble Ponies and Fightin Phils wrap up their four-game series Wednesday morning. RHP Tony Dibrell takes the mound for the Ponies. Binghamton then returns home for eight games (four vs. Bowie and four vs. Erie).

Still some rumblings of a "possible Noah trade" with the San Diego Padres. The Padres have three very good starters already at the MLB level, and a stable of really good starters down at their MiLB level. But they want another young stud to head up their young rotation already there in San Diego, namely Noah Syndergaard. Who knows actually, it could just be the press saying this, or it could have serious legs to this story. We'll see.

If it isn't true, then the Mets have an outstanding 26 year old righty starter named Noah Syndergaard for two more years under their control, which is great.

If the rumblings are true, I like these young Padres' starters: (1) Adrian Morjon (LSP). Adrian is young but physically already developed. He throws mid-nineties and it is obvious that he is all upside from here. He's on San Diego now. (2) Craig Quantrill (RSP). Craig is a tall young right-hander who throws mid-90's already and he too has been scouted as all upside from here. He looks like he is ready now (with several pitches in tow) to make a splash in MLB. (3) MacKenzie Gore (LSP). MacKenzie is a highly tauted starter as well, has multiple pitches, throws hard, and by scouts definition is another cannot miss MLB young starter in the making. Unlike the first two starters I mentioned above both ready now, MacKenzie's projected arrival is 2021. But he is definitely worth that wait.

Q: Is the MLB philosophy on pitching staffs slowly changing back from all fire ballers to some fire ballers and then some location and secondary pitch guys as well? I wonder what Tom Glavine would say.

Boston spanks the Yankees in game one of four last night. But it is a four game series, and we will see. Porcello pitched decently and the Red Sox all hit. Tanaka looked badly again against Boston and was knocked out early.

Excellent series if you love baseball.

Righty relief pitcher Edwin Diaz's name is also being bantered about for "possible trading." My take is that Edwin was a phenominal closer with Seattle and has not hit his complete stride yet here. He is just 25 years old right now and is making just slightly over league minimum.

The NY Mets bullpen hasn't worked for quite sometime. No one here has yet to build a quality bullpen and the 2019 bullpen is no exception. Edwin has excellent stats all around leading into this 2019 season, and at present they are getting better than earlier on this season. I think it is possible that the trade had something to do with that, and quite possibly it affected his adjustment to the Mets.

He throws 100 mph and is the Mets closer. Patience can be rewarded.
