FIRST ROUND HITTER PERFORMANCES

2019 DRAFT POST MORTEM

The Mets, with the 12th overall pick, chose 19 year old slugger Brett Baty.

Baty has 4 homers and 21 RBIs in 29 games, but has a slash line of just .202/.336/.404.  growing pains.

How are his brethren hitters in the MLB draft first round doing?

Mostly similarly to Baty, but some better ("Nice").

Let's take a very brief look at hitters in the top 16...noting there were 14 hitters in the first 16 picks (stats thru Wednesday):

#1 Pick - Adley Rutschman - the catcher (21) is hitting just .173/.283/.250 in the NY Penn (NYP) league.

# 2 Pick - Bobby Witt, Jr. - the 19 y/o SS is hitting .255/.302/.316.

# 3 Pick - Andrew Vaughn (21) - moved to High A recently, hitting .300/.412/.483 (but that includes 9 for 15 in rookie ball). Nice.

# 4 Pick - JJ Bleday (21) - Hi A - .182/.206/.273.

# 5 Pick - Ryley Greene (18) - NY Penn league - .312/.399/.448. Nice.

# 6 Pick - CJ Abrams (18) - Rookie ball - .393/.436/.647.  Nice.

# 8 Pick - Josh Jung (21) - SAL - .337/.394/.442. Nice.

# 9 Pick - Shea Langeliers (21) - .206/.263/.309.

# 10 Pick - Hunter Bishop (21) - Short A - .216/.410/.351

# 13 Pick - Keoni Cavaco (18) - GCL - .197/.250/.296.

# 14 Pick - Bryson Stott (21) - NYP - .267/.357/.453.

# 15 Pick - Will Wilson (21) - Rook - .295/.340/.486.

# 16 Pick - Corbin Carroll (18) - Rook - .291/.412/.455 with 16 steals in 30 games.  Nice.

Time will tell on all these picks - but since the Mets could not pick someone ahead of their pick for obvious reasons, only Corbin Carroll of the 4 hitter's picks behind him (at #13 - #16) as of right now looks like he may have been a better choice.

But the sample size so far is far too small to reach that conclusion.

Baty triple and homer last night - he seems to be adjusting to Kingsport. Strikeouts are down, too. Normalize, then rise.

I am stoked about Baty's future..........he is playing way above his age level, so an adjustment period should have
been expected.

On that Peter Alonso toss to Jacob deGrom at first.

What may have happened (if I am seeing it right) is that Peter made an excellent fielding of a relatively hard hit ground ball towards first. He went down on his knees to capture the hit and made a reasonable toss to Jacob. Jacob had to hurry over to first because the runner was close, so that Peter had to also hurry the throw over.

What I saw was something very human on Jacob's part and if you have ever played baseball you know what I mean.

Jacob had to look down to see where the first base bag was because it is exceedingly easy to step on the bag and twist your ankle if you do not land on the bag just right. The bag sticks up higher than it looks on television.

The ball came in quickly to Jacob because the play was going to be very close at first base. In the half second of looking down to where the bag was, Jacob lost a little bit of his foot speed stride and the ball led him more than it would have if Jacob didn't do the right thing and look down to see where the bag was.

Yes, it cost the Mets three runs when all was said and done. But I would much rather have lost that game (the way the Mets did) than lost Jacob deGrom for five weeks with a high ankle sprain or twisted knee. And believe me, I have seen that happen often.

This NY Mets team is very resilient now and playing at a much higher level than I have seen probably since the 2015 season. This whole thing really is on target with the 2019 NY Mets making the wild card, and (who knows) maybe even more. They are that good now.

I am just glad that Jacob deGrom did not get hurt on that play. It is not an easy play to make, although we take it for complete granted when everything goes precisely well.

I am liking this 2019 NY Mets team and it is obviously really good.

To me, MLB is right now in a proverbial passing off of the torch. Gone now are so many excellent older veterans who graced the baseball stage. But the level of play of the younger players here now, really does speak volumes for MLB.

Teams like the Mets, Padres, Blue Jays, Nationals, Atlanta, Yankees (as well as so many other teams) all have an abundance of good solid younger players starting.

It is "New Era" and it has been a fun season watching them all play and get started this season and last.

Look at JD Davis as an example.

First half here he barely played at all. But the unfortunate injury to Dominic Smith opened up the door of opportunity for JD. He breezed thru that door, accepted his opportunity, and look at him now.

JD Davis is not just very talented, he is also very wise in his baseball acumen. He has the skill set of a great hitter, discipline at the plate, and the ability to analyze the opposing pitchers he may face. And JD has defense too. What a great addition.

Right, can't win 'em all, and we came out of the game healthy.

Is it true that Elizabeth Warren is throwing out the first pitch for the Braves?

Thinking too idealistically, I am guilty here now. But I was thinking ahead too far, and wondering what the Mets will need in the off season.

I want to assume that the Brandon Nimmo will be back whole come 2020 ST. We all do because Brandon is a two legged inspiration type player. So with that wish, I think that the Mets 2020 outfield will be outstanding again, as it has been in 2019 overall.

But if the Mets were to go with the outfield of JD Davis, Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto, and Jeff McNeil, one could be moved to the infield to start. Which is a nice problem for any team to have.

So the one player that I have seen play a lot this season and liked, is Michael Chavis on the Red Sox. I think that Michael Chavis would fit in here to this excellent mix very well. He too is a quality player as well as a quality person.

The other possible need is at relief and the catcher positions. But I think come the end of the 2019 season, the relief pitching may have been for the most part overall solved.

At catcher, the Mets now have two really good catchers down on the farm in Patrick Mazeika (AA) and Ali Sanchez (AAA). I'd might look there first for a catcher more come 2020.

Just an idealist's viewpoint, nothing more really.

On E. Warren. She probably is throwing out the first pitch. Politicians love good baseball teams. Maybe the Mets can get Pat Paulsen (back) or Senator Bill Bradley?

Kudos to GM Van Halen. His dream is being realized, as is all of our's as well. It's the biggest fun.
