We are saddened to hear about the passing of Al Jackson, an original Met, who spent 50 years in a New York Mets uniform. He was a pitcher, major league coach, minor league pitching coordinator and front office advisor. It would be impossible to calculate the number of players and staff he touched and influenced during his career. Jackson, 83, passed away today after a long illness at the Emerald Nursing Home in Port St. Lucie, FL. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Nadine, his sons, Reggie and Barry and grandchildren, Wesley and Kyle.

I got to know Al when he would visit the Savannah Sand Gnats as a roving pitching instructor.
He would 'hold court' to the gaggle of reporters (one... me) around the pre-game dinner time going on inside the clubhouse.
He always was a gentleman and treated me with 100% respect, just like if I was a reporter for the NY Post.
I already miss him.
Yes Mack it's called "class" and unfortunately it's sadly missing for the most part these days as the over paid self absorbed air heads get all the press but luckily we have some guys with "old school" class in Alonso, McNeil and Conforto to name a few. Also as we watch "The Polar Bear" game after game and more recently carry this team on his back with Jeff out you have to just sit back and enjoy watching him play AND how he conducts himself. What a pleasure and a gift for all us long suffering Met fans....Thanks Pete.
Al was class and humble - and a fine pitcher for a VERY bad early Mets team. Condolences to his family.
