OPEN THREAD - Rene Rivera

Of all positions on the field, the one where a back up player typically plays the most is catcher.

Back up catcher Tomas Nido in 104 at bats is hitting .204 (thru Wednesday) with a woeful .232 OBP for 2019, and is slumping below that considerably of late, with 4 for his last 34.

Former Met Rene Rivera, on the other hand, is in AAA and since the start of May, in 285 at bats, has a robust 23 homers, 65 RBIs, and a .270 average.  And, yes, then another homer and double on Friday night.

In his last 5 games thru Friday, he has 11 hits, 11 RBIs, and 5 HRs, including 3 Thursday night.

Considering the Mets are in a pennant race, wouldn't it make sense to not wait for Sept 1 to swap the two players and bring Rivera up?

What say you?

Agree but they'll probably wait till Sept. and anymore we almost have to agree with BVW as this streak has hit ridiculous proportions: Luis Guillorme hits a game winning HR really??? Two amazing late inning comebacks and contributions from just about everyone. I know I'm drinking the cool ade here but this is reminding me of the runs in 69', 73' and 15' so who knows but this is fun. Also I was thinking of our roster in 2020 and for the first time in a long time there really isn't much to change maybe some position changes and of course BP additions/subtractions but solid otherwise. The big question will be who do we sign long term? Anyway LGM!

The backup catcher is usually one who is a defense first player, which Nido is. I'm trying to recall Rivera's defense and I'm not sure where he stacks up next to Nido. If he is comparable to Nido then I agree they should swap. If not then the Mets should wait until September to bring up Rivera. Is Rivera on the 40 man? That's another consideration.

Holmer remember Ramos ain't here for his defense and though I agree with your premise we've lived to many years as Met fan's with horrible offense usually in the bottom 3 or 4 spots in the batting order and paid for it.

Just checked and Rivera is not on the 40 man roster. The line up is longer with the emergence of Rosario so the Mets can afford to play Nido as long as the rest of the line up is more offense oriented. With that being said, the Mets could add Rivera to both the 40 man and the ML roster by sending down or DFAing Altherr, who has provided very little. I would still keep Nido on the 25 man roster though.

Gary -

My guess is Matt Blackham will be the next up for the pen.

Catcher wise...

Ramos is... right now... hitting like a core player. Leave him C-1

The best defensive catcher in the chain is Ali Sanchez

Next... Nido

What Guillorme did last night is the reason why I said to give him a chance to play before just giving the position to Panik. He has the talent but needs a chance to show that at the ML level.

McNeil, Smith and now Davis are 3 players who were gathering dust on the bench and look what happened when they were given proper opportunities.

Would I bring up Rivera to replace Nido? No. Right now, deGrom, Syndergaard feel very comfortable pitching to him so I would not rock the boat right now.

The one move I would make however, dfa Altheer in favor of Rajai Davis.

Guillorme's hit was huge.

We have several pitchers we could DFA right now in a heartbeat to get the red hot Rivera to Queens NOW. He had a single and double and 2 ribs last night. Ramos can't play everyday - and Nido could come back Sept 1. I don't want to take this magical win streak for granted - I want Rivera here STAT.

Altherr makes Eric Campbell look like an All-Star anyone replacing him would be an upgrade.

McNeil has been in the lineup since a year ago. Smith was great off the bench, but tailed off once he played more. And JDD earned his way onto the lineup after sharing a spot with Smith.

Rivera should be called up, he hit very well with the Mets during his previous stint.

Rivera right now has more value off the 40-man than on it. Off the 40-man, he can be traded. On the 40-man, he cannot. You can always cut Altherr to add Rivera, but then you can’t flip him for something, and since you really don’t need him, why not wait?

TexasGus - I guess that is the real point - do we really need Rene Rivera for 20 days? I think so - one or two big hits that Nido isn't providing could be pivotal.
