Corey Oswalt named IL Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season

PC - Danny Tripodi

For the second time this season, Syracuse Mets right-handed pitcher Corey Oswalt has been named International League Pitcher of the Week. Most recently, Oswalt won the award for the week of August 19-25. The 25-year-old made two starts this past week. Last Monday, Oswalt threw seven scoreless innings at Lehigh Valley while allowing just four hits and no walks in a game that Syracuse needed Oswalt’s best as part of a 1-0 victory for the Mets. Then on Sunday, the San Diego native collected his tenth win of the season, throwing five and 2/3 innings with four strikeouts, only four hits allowed, and two runs scored against him in an 11-3 Syracuse win over Rochester.

Oswalt was also named International League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 15-21 when he combined to strike out 12 batters and allow just one earned run in 12 innings pitched over two starts during that week.

This is the fourth time in Oswalt’s professional career that he has won a weekly league award. In addition to the two International League Pitcher of the Week honors this year, Oswalt was named New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week on July 21, 2014 when he was with the Brooklyn Cyclones, and he was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week on August 6, 2017 when he was with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

With Oswalt earning this week’s IL Pitcher of the Week honors, Syracuse has claimed five weekly league awards this year. Chris Mazza was named International League Pitcher of the Week twice this season (May 26th and June 16th), Drew Gagnon was named International League Pitcher of the Week on August 11th, and now Corey Oswalt has won the award twice (July 21st and August 26th).
