SPOTLIGHT ON KINGSPORT METS AND GCL METS BEST PERFORMERS

Great performing prospects make us all jump for joy.

Or at least me.  You react any way you wish, no judgment.

Anyway:

These two teams have the Mets' top 3 draft picks (Bretty Baty, Josh Wolf, Matt Allen), and of course they require mention from me - which is simply this:

Allen and Wolf have thrown a mere total 8.1 innings combined and fanned 13 - so far so good.

Baty hit like a ball of fire for a few GCL games, then got promoted and struggled greatly at first in Kingsport, going 0-14 with 11 Ks in his first 4 games.  Since then, while his average has been low (.203) his on base % is strong and he has 12 extra base hits in 94 at bats, so things are looking promising for Brett.

KINGSPORT METS' BEST PERFORMERS:

The catching tandem of 17 year old Francisco Alvarez and 19 year old Will Astudillo have done great - across the GCL and Kingsport, Alvarez in 31 games is hitting .342/.427/.556, albeit with a bit of a cool off recently.

Astudillo fans little, similar to his major league Twins catcher brother, and in 24 games with Kingsport, is hitting .301/.363/.462.

Scott Ota - 21 year old lefty hitting 5'11" 200 OF drafted in the 10th round this season, does not seem to have speed, judging by his zero steals in zero attempts, but in 39 games is hitting .282/.370/.528, with a K about once every seven plate appearances.  3 assists vs. one error in 35 outfield starts.  And heating up: 13 for his last 30, with 8 walks, spanning 9 games.  Me?  I'd promote him to Brooklyn ASAP.

On the pitcher's slab:

Jefferson Escorcha is 7-1, 2.08...sweet.  Only caution light is his only having 25 Ks in 34.2 IP.

Other pitchers with solid if not spectacular performances are Nick MacDonald, Reyson Santos, Junior Santos, and Michal Otanez.

GCL METS' BEST PERFORMERS:

Kenedy Corona - 19 year old 5'11', 185 OF.  He started in the DSL this year, but got a quick promo, and in 30 GCL games, he is .304/.407/.441 with 9 of 10 steals.  Interesting.

Warren Saunders - the 20 year old 6'3" 190 Bahamian IF in 20 games has hit .295/.371/.359 - so far, so good.

Zach Ashford was the Mets' 6th round pick.  He sputtered in 16 games for Brooklyn (.136), was sent to the GCL, and in 28 games there is hitting .292/.387/.427.  Playing all 4 IF positions, just 1 error.

Pitchers?

Joander Suarez, a 6'3", 180 righty, has a 1.78 ERA in 30 innings with a 1.05 WHIP and 38 Ks - nice.

Jhonfran Escalona, despite giving up 5 earned runs in his last 2.1 inning outing, is 3-1, 1.52, with a 0.90 WHIP - nice, too.

So now you know, folks.  I hope your prospects are good.

I think that Francisco Alvarez is going to have a long and successful career as a New York Met.

Of cource, I said that about Dunn, Kelenic, Kay, and SWR

Trade bait is sold at Brodie's fishing store. Lots of it.

Well, since we couldn't land Seth Beer in the draft a few years ago, our consolation is a Corona.
