Mack's Mock Pick - #32 - OF - Will Taylor

Will Taylor

Mack's spin -

We have talked about this many times.

Will is a very talented baseball player. The problem is is he is also a very talented **** quarterback.

Clemson has promised him the opportunity to play for both sports at their school.

Can he pass on being the QB and follow in the footsteps of Desaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence?

And can a team risk picking him early without a verbal commitment by Taylor to sign?

Taylor is a tremendous athlete who excels at three sports and could play football at Clemson with excellent speed and a good feel to hit.

Dutch Fork senior outfielder Will Taylor has a bright, athletic future. He’s currently a first-round Major League Baseball draft prospect.

“That would be something special,” Taylor said about potentially being selected in the first round of the MLB draft. “It’s been a childhood dream of mine. We’ll see where it takes us in the end. That’s the ultimate goal in the end. Whether it’s out of high school or college.”

Taylor is a multi-sport athlete who signed with Clemson to play baseball and football. In late June, he intends to move up to Tiger Town a few weeks ahead of the MLB draft. Whether he ever wears the Orange and Purple in a game remains up in the air.

Taylor may be the Draft’s best three-sport star. He accounted for 32 touchdowns while quarterbacking Dutch Fork to the South Carolina 5-A title last fall -- earning a football scholarship to play wide receiver at Clemson in the process -- and also has won state wrestling championships in the 152- and 160-pound weight classes. He’s more advanced on the diamond than most multi-sport athletes, with impressive feel for hitting and center-field instincts, and he’s also at least a plus-plus runner with developing strength.

25. Oakland Athletics: Will Taylor, OF, Dutch Fork (S.C.) HS

Taylor is committed to Clemson for football and baseball. His top trait is his elite speed. He is more of a contact-oriented hitter who will be a top-of-the-order hitter in the pro ranks. Scouts also speak highly of his aggressive mindset.

25) A's: Will Taylor, OF, Dutch Fork HS (SC)

He plays football (and will keep doing so if he goes to Clemson), he wrestles, he can really run and he can hit. What’s not to like?

He's signed with Clemson to play football (where he's expected to play wide receiver) and baseball. He's a plus-plus runner who is above-average defensively in center field. He's less advanced at the plate, but he does have good barrel control and gap power.

The top 2021 high school prospect out of South Carolina, Taylor elevated his draft stock significantly after turning in one of the best all-around performances at East Coast Pro. A standout prep athlete who is also a talented wrestler and quarterback, Taylor’s loudest attribute is likely his natural athleticism. He’s arguably a double-plus runner—Taylor clocked a 6.45-second hand-timed 60-yard dash at ECP—and an instinctual center fielder who has impressive feel for the game on both sides of the ball. His swing isn’t the most fluid at the plate and some evaluators have called it rigid but scouts also acknowledged that Taylor had great natural feel for the barrel to go along with above-average bat speed. Taylor showed an ability to square up velocity and sit back and drive breaking balls with authority at ECP, and while it’s mostly gap-to-gap power at the moment, he should have no problem racking up extra-base hits given his standout running ability. Taylor is committed to Clemson for baseball, but he has also generated some interest from Dabo Swinney and the Tigers’ football program as a slot receiver.

80 runner, covers tremendous ground and has a good knack for contact at the plate, giving him substantial upside as a top-of-the-order bat with impact speed and defensive potential. Lacks punch. Similar to Enrique Bradfield.

If he didn’t have the Clemson situation
Would he be higher on your list?
