Mack's Mock Pick - #33 - RHP - Will Bednar

Will Bednar

Mack's take -

Bednar is still leading Mississippi State through the CWS (vs. Notre Dame this weekend).

So far this season - 15-game, 12-starts, 7-1, 3.17, 71-IP, 109-K

Would have loved to see a smaller ERA, but this is still a super stat line against a super schedule.

Final Thoughts - Frankly, you have the Justin Dunn starter kit here. It’s a good fastball, comfortably above average with the potential of a plus offering with some refinement at the next level. It’s a wicked breaking ball with big, aggressive two-plane break; a true swing-and-miss slider. The changeup will be a big undertaking and important should he reach his low 3/high 4 ceiling in a rotation. There’s certainly a non-zero chance Bednar ends up in a bullpen for a championship team, but if for some reason this type of arm talent falls to the beginning of the second round, the Mariners should have interest.

29. Los Angeles Dodgers: Will Bednar, RHP, Mississippi State

Bednar is in his first full season at Mississippi State after last season ended prematurely due to the pandemic. He has an above-average fastball-slider combination with a solid curveball and at least an average changeup.

4-24-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Will Bednar absolute electricity right now. He's up to 95 with a power slider that's touched 85 in this one. He's allowed 1 hit and posted 8 punchies in 4 innings to a stacked Vanderbilt lineup. He's earning some cash right now.

Bednar has a solid Fastball/Curveball combo. Each grading as Above-average with the Slider showing Plus often. Does a good solid tunneling those pitches consistently. There’s a starters build but a desperate need for a 3rd pitch or a reliever future is extremely likely. Even a 45 grade Changeup could do him wonders in ability to attack LHH more consistently and wrinkle in a 3rd pitch to get them off his FB when the SL is off.

 3-27-21 - Aaron Fitt @aaronfitt

Dominant first inning for @HailStateBB RHP Will Bednar, who fans two on high heat and then gets a popout in a 13-pitch frame. He's 92-95 with explosive life up in the zone (elite spin rate up to 2693 rpm) and also premium spin rate on his tight  83-84 slider (2800-2946 rpm)

 3-18-21 - Joe Doyle  @JoeDoyleMiLB

Will Bednar moving into the Mississippi State rotation is pretty important as far as the MLB Draft goes.

Bednar's slider is a huge pitch, comfortably 60+. It's one of the better pitches in the draft. He's 91-94/t97 with a below average/fringy changeup as well.

9. Will Bednar, Mississippi State, P

While Bednar, a standout righty, will be a big contributor for the Bulldogs, MSU’s Bulldogs can’t hold a candle to the outstanding name of Bednar’s high school program in suburban Pittsburgh. Bednar went to Mars Area High School … where he pitched for the Fightin’ Planets. State will be hoping for some out-of-this-world results from Bednar in 2021.

Commit/Drafted: Padres '16 (35)

Age At Draft: 21.1

Bednar showed improved fastball velocity and a more efficient delivery during the spring of his senior season in high school to elevate his draft stock and rank as the No. 190 prospect in the 2019 class. A shoulder injury diminished that improvement, however, and Bednar made it to campus at Mississippi State after the Padres drafted him in the 35th round. His performance in a shortened 2020 season was strong, with a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings, while striking out 23 batters (13.5 per nine) and walking six (3.5 per nine). Bednar has a fastball that sits around 92-93 mph and he’s been up to 96 in the past. The pitch has good swing-and-miss qualities and he also shows an average slider, changeup and curveball. With a legitimate four-pitch mix, average control and a sturdy, 6-foot-2, 230-pound frame, Bednar has plenty of starter traits, and with more collegiate track record could move up into day one consideration.

 12-17-20  -  Miss State -

Right hander Will Bednar is just behind MacLeod on MLB Pipeline's list at No. 41 in the rankings. Though he'll be in just his second year at MSU in the upcoming season, he'll be draft eligible as he turns 21 before MLB's event. And he indeed seems likely to be a high pick as well given the dazzling stuff he showed from the mound in 2020. In 15.1 innings which included three relief appearances and one start, Bednar struck out about 1.5 batters per inning. He finished with 23 strikeouts, had an impressive 1.76 ERA and held opposing batters to a .161 average

Bednar's fastball has some late life and ride and has ticked up last year now 91-94/95 mph. The FB is his primary and gets thrown a ton. CB is only true seconary right now at 75-78. Big league reliever floor thanks to loud two-pitch mix.
