Mets Links:

Mets 14 Orioles 1 (Box Score)  Jonathan Villar 3B 2 for 5, 2 doubles, 2 runs scored; Francisco Lindor SS 1 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 K; Pete Alonso 1B 3 for 5, HR, double, 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored; James McCann C 2 for 4, double, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 1 K; Billy McKinney RF 3 for 5, 2 HRs, 5 RBIs, 3 runs scored; Kevin Pillar LF 3 for 4, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, 2 runs scored, 4 RBIs, 1 K; Mason Williams CF 2 for 4, HR, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 K; Taijuan Walker 7 innings, 1 run – earned, 5 hits, 1 walk, 9 Ks; Jeurys Familia, 1 inning, no hits, no runs; Seth Lugo 1 inning, no runs, 1 hit, 1 K;

Metstradamus: “The Mets broke out the long ball in bunches at Oriole Park tonight while Taijuan Walker gave up one run in seven innings as the Mets defeated the Orioles 14-1. I mean, that’s a really simple way of describing a ballgame, which is great because I don’t think the Mets have had many ballgames where you can say that things were low stress and normal.”

Brain Joura Mets360: “Walker struck out nine in seven innings and retired 13 straight at one point. And the run he gave up should come with an asterisk, as it certainly looked like he had Ryan Mountcastle struck out to end the inning but didn’t get the call. Mountcastle ended up driving in the only run of the game for the Orioles.” (Subscription required)

NY Post: Mets pummel Matt Harvey in laugher over Orioles. “The Mets hammered their one-time ace for seven earned runs over three innings…and saw his ERA jump to 7.41. Over his last six appearances, beginning with that outing at Citi Field on May 12 (in which he also allowed seven earned runs), he has pitched to a 14.19 ERA after a solid start to the season.”

Mets.com: In 1st place at one-third mark: Mets crush O's. “the Mets capped the first third of their season with a 30-24 record, while extending their hold on the NL East pole position to 32 consecutive days. It’s their best record over the first third of a season since 2016, which also happens to be the last time they played a postseason game.”

Mets.com: Notes: McNeil, Conforto's return on horizon. “Second baseman Jeff McNeil will begin a Minor League rehab stint this weekend, according to manager Luis Rojas, which would put McNeil on track for a return well before the end of the month. And while the Mets don’t have a similar timeline for outfielder Michael Conforto, who is also nursing a hamstring strain, Conforto indicated he could go on assignment by the middle of the month. That would line him up to return before July.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: Jacob deGrom cheating accusation reveals problems. “This just adds to the sins (and sadness) of a widespread cheating scandal. It makes us unable to differentiate the clean from the dirty. It soils greatness as we wonder how that greatness was achieved. DeGrom very possibly has done nothing other than be brilliant.”

NY Post: Everything you need to know about MLB’s ‘sticky stuff’ scandal.

NY Post: Pete Alonso rips MLB over substance scandal with conspiracy theory. “Alonso ripped MLB for changing the ball this season, with the idea of curtailing the offensive explosion of recent seasons. Alonso said it was a calculated move to correspond with the superstar class of position players that will hit the free-agent market this offseason.”

FanGraphs: Keeping Up With the KBO: May, Part Two. “the title of Magic Bears Foreign Pitcher this season belongs to Walker Lockett. Through 11 starts, Lockett leads all qualified pitchers in ERA (1.87) and all of the KBO in WAR (3.4). His FIP is of course higher, and I don’t buy his one-homer-per-67 innings pace, but Lockett’s sinker-changeup combo provides him a decent shot at reigning as one of the KBO’s premier contact suppressors.”

Nice to see the Dominguez clip - brief but liked what I saw.

Szapucki's numbers yesterday were kind of like ... Harvey's. Draw your own conclusions.

Baty could be coming very fast - get him to AA ASAP.

Metoyer and Montes de Oca both effective in relief for Brooklyn yesterday. The new M & M Boys.

Pillar two homers when most guys would just be thinking of starting to play again - but Carrasco MIA for 4 months and counting. He might be turning into the 2020 version of Lowrie.

Tom,

Baty's production has seemed to increase a lot since Francisco Alvarez was called up and hitting behind him. If Baty is moved to AA, they will need to make sure he has some protection in that lineup.

Tom Brennan said...

THAT'S TRUE. Sometimes it is a challenge to hit when no one else is, but Carlos Cortes is raking. He gets no ink, but he can hit. After his first 3 or 4 game cold start, he has hit in AA a lot like Squirrel 2018. And that is really something.

John From Albany said...

Cortes really started hitting once Mangum was placed behind him in lineup. When rest of lineup started to hit, that's when Vientos started hitting. I would have left Elizalde in AA just to hit behind Vientos.

Any Wilmer Reyes news?

Did Alonso stir the pot with the MLB accusations on doctoring baseballs to depress the next free agent class or what? That will surely be pounded today from coast to coast.

John From Albany said...

Gus, That Alonso story is getting pounded everywhere.

Tom - last I heard was that he had an unspecified injury and that it has taken a turn for the worse. That sounds like a hamstring issue. He will rule 5 eligible again this winter, could be interesting to see what happens.

Things That Go BING!

1. It isn't so much the batting here because the subs here have been overall absolutely terrific. Kudos to each of these players. It is however the starting pitching. The Mets right now have two starters that need more training down in AAA. They have potential but are not yet ready. They are hurting this team at current. With a little refinement at Syracuse, they could become quite optimal up with the Mets second half. In other words don't write them off, they just need tweaking.

2. The problem with this rotation is still the injuries. Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco. And at Syracuse there isn't that much at starting pitcher and it is probably why Syracuse struggles so mightily. Maybe Sean Penn Foley could be one callup. But the second starter may not exist yet from the Mets MiLB.

3. The other thought I have is getting serious about stretching out maybe one from the following group: 1. Gsellman 2. Familia 3. Lugo.

4. The Mets could have really used Franklyn Kilome igniting his game this season. Hopefully it happens soon. He has what it takes. To me, it's just finding him the right tutor. Someone who could get thru and help Franklyn grasp whatever else that has been missing in his approach. Ooh, what about the Acereros Bartolo? Perfecto I'd say. The Mets could use Bartolo around here again.

5. The Mets are a little bit streaky still offensively, but so far it hasn't taken them out of first place. They will get four hits one game, and fourteen the next. Bad starts and up and down hits per game won't get a team to the dance. It is all about momentum, confidence, and consistency. The feeling that your team can win heading into any game against any other team. This is close here to that. If Carlos Carrasco can get back here soon, maybe one of the veteran Mets relievers can get successfully stretched out, or the Mets make a starting pitcher trade, I personally think that this would greatly enhance this ball club's chances second half. Right now they need to do a thorough assessment of their needs, and this starting rotation issue is most vital.

Just Another Idea From The Haystack

I was thinking. Is it possible that the cookie people at Citi Field (and they know who they are) could play this song below whenever Mason Williams hits a homerun?

Thank You

What about getting a young 24 year old lefty starter/reliever in here like a Red Sox Darwin Hernandez? Stretching him back out. He has had his ups and downs with the BoSox, but the kid does have some fairly serious potential about him. Number two guy for Bartolo to work with?

There has to be other left-handed starters out there as well not named Matz we could get. Matz will fade. We all know that.

Or a veteran sure thing type starter with just a very decent 2.5 seasons left (under $4.0 mill ea.) on an eight year contract that he signed with the Dodgers? Kenta Maeda. He is currently coming off a groin injury but should be ready to go very soon I am reading. The guy is currently on the last place Minnesota Twins. This could possibly make some adequate sense for here, especially in the event that Noah and Candy may not be able regroup for 2021.

Anon -

Not sure how Classical Gas would go over with today's generation.

Kilome on the Syracuse Il. He pitched a shutout then was pretty much shut down. Hope it is nothing serious. I will pass it on when able.

On Pete's "Balls Theory"

Baseballs have changed in the MLB since they went round actually. By bringing this up, Pete should now expect baseballs made of women's hairnet cloth being pitched to him and nothing much more.

Good Luck Pete!

Swing for the fences man.

Anon, watch how Megill does tonight. If he excels for Syracuse, he makes a real statement.
