The Mets were one out away, but Rojas — of course it had to be Rojas — drove in the tying run”

NY Post: Diamondbacks announcer Bob Brenly mocks Marcus Stroman’s du-rag. “Diamondbacks analyst Bob Brenly, commenting on Stroman’s head covering under his cap, spouted: ‘I’m sure that is the same du-rag that Tom Seaver used to wear when he pitched for the Mets.’”

Hideo Nomo, limiting the Mets to one run on two hits in 8+ innings of work, picks up his first major league win, a 2-1 decision at Dodger Stadium. L.A. signed the 26 year-old former Japanese All-Star in the off-season.

2000

Fred McGriff becomes the thirty-first player to hit 400 career homers. The Devil Rays first baseman's milestone round-tripper comes off Glendon Rusch, a two-run drive in a 5-3 loss to the Mets at Shea Stadium.

2010: In San Diego, Adrian Gonzalez hits a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning to lead the Padres to a 5 - 1 win over the Mets. San Diego's David Eckstein had tied the game at 1 with a single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th against Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, after 8 scoreless innings by Johan Santana. It's not the only late-game grand slam hit today: in Toronto, Carl Crawford of the Rays also hits one, capping a six-run 9th inning, to beat the Blue Jays, 7 - 3, and give David Price his American League-leading 8th win of the year.

2011: The Pirates take an early 7 - 0 lead against Mike Pelfrey and the Mets, but New York rallies for 9 straight runs. The Mets score 3 on Carlos Beltran's three-run blast in the 3rd, add a four-run inning in the 6th to even the score against Paul Maholm, then win it in the 8th with 2 more runs. Mets manager Terry Collins does some fancy maneuverings in the 8th, sending pitcher Chris Capuano to pinch-hit with pinch-runner Willie Harris on first, hoping for a sacrifice bunt; when losing P Jose Veras balks the runner over, Collins calls Capuano back, and sends in Josh Thole to finish the at-bat. In the end, four walks and a wild pitch in the inning sink the Bucs, who lose, 9 - 8, in what is the Mets' biggest comeback in 11 years.

2018 - Jacob deGrom matches a career high set just two weeks earlier by racking up 13 strikeouts in 7 innings in a start against the Cubs, but the NL ERA leader has to settle for another no-decision as the game is decided in 14 innings. Seven relievers add another 11 strikeouts to give the Mets 24, 2 shy of the all-time mark for an extra-inning game, but it's the Cubs who break through with 6 runs in the top of the 14th, highlighted by Albert Almora's two-run double off Buddy Baumann, to win, 7 - 1. Luke Farrell pitches 5 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

Tough loss. The game tying single off Diaz was a tough pitch to hit, but Rojas got it.

May has not been good. Now it's June. Turn the calendar page already.

How bizarre is it that the Mets lose on a fair ball that may have been foul on the anniversary of a foul ball called fair leading to one of the great moments in their history.

Great point Bob.

I sure this June is better than past years. May has been used a lot. I would have tried to use Lugo at least once the last two nights.

Gotta win today before we head to San Diego. Mets have losing record against teams with records over .500.

With the Mets needing to give the prospect to the Red Sox to complete the Khalil Lee trade according to MLBTR, I bet it’s Szapucki and that’s why we haven’t seen much of him this year. We are to find out by Friday... Not sure I’m in love with this swap, more rookie GMs being taken to the cleaners.

Gus - I think we have not seen much of Szapucki because he was very close to coming to the Big Leagues to start but at last minute kept getting sent back. They sort have been jerking him back and forth for different reasons...limiting his innings when he does pitch in case he needs to be called up. One prevailing thought it will be someone like Jaylen Palmer.

If Lee keeps striking out...maybe he will be the PTBNL

I still wonder about him, though...5 hits and 5 walks in 4 innings against a very weak hitting Rochester team. Not how I spell dominance.

Tom - that last Szapucki start was after a long layoff and going back and forth to NY. He needs regular work like Kilome, Eickoff. and Reyes. Was surprised that Meyer was sent back to AA...thought he worked well with the pitchers, threw out runners, and hit! Looks like the plan is to give Mazeika the full time catching job in case he is needed in NY.

What's up with Marcus Styroman?

Maybe next time don't blame others for your "hang pitches" to batters for extra base hits.

Let's say that Shaq broadcast yesterdays game and made that same exact stupid do-rag comment. Knowing Shaq, it probably would just have been laughed at as it should have been. No harm meant or done. Then Marcus could have sent Shaq a similar do-rag with his autograph on it, and Shaq would probably have worn it his very next broadcast.

Much a-do about nothing. Focus on the games.

I know a few of their starting eight players now.

Hearing Maybin may soon be released for $1.

Cosmo still warming up in the bullpen. Fifth day straight. Getting a few strikes in over the correct bullpen homeplate now. Has 18 pounds doing. Vying hard for a new ten day contract.

Newman wants a shot now. Says the weight should not matter. It's what's inside.
