Annabelle Lee, aunt of future major leaguer Bill Lee, pitches the first of five perfect games in the 12-year history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The Minneapolis Millerettes southpaw knuckleballer, who will also pitch a no-hitter for the Fort Wayne Daisies exactly one year from this date, doesn't allow any batters to reach first base in the 18-0 rout of the Kenosha (Wis) Comets.

Eddie Murray sets a new RBI record for switch hitters, driving in the 1,510th run of his career with a first-inning sac fly in the Mets' 15-1 rout of Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium. The New York first baseman surpasses Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle's 18-year total to establish the new mark.

1999
Derek Jeter's streak of reaching base safely ends at 54 straight games when the Mets keep him off the basepaths in their 7-2 win over the Yankees in the Bronx. The defeat also marks the end of Roger Clemens' streak of 20 consecutive victories, an American League record.
2006
On the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year of the century, the Dodgers score six runs in the sixth inning during the sixth game of the homestand, beating the Mets, 8-5. On 05/05/05, the Twins scored five times in the fifth inning en route to a 9-0 victory over the Indians.


Baseball Reference:

2003: In interleague play, the New York Mets end the Seattle Mariners' 13-game road winning streak with a 3 - 2 victory in the first meeting between the teams. It is the longest streak in the majors since the Detroit Tigers' 17 straight road wins in 1984.

2010: Major League Baseball is investigating an injury to under-performing Mets pitcher Oliver Perez, who was placed on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right knee on June 5th; he is 0-3, 6.28 this season. The suspicions come because the injury is very convenient to the Mets: Perez has refused an assignment to the minors, and manager Jerry Manuel has stated that he will not use him in games that have not already been decided. Had the injury not appeared, the Mets would have had to choose between two equally unpalatable options: release Perez and swallow the remainder of his $12 million a year contract; or waste a valuable roster spot on a player who cannot contribute to the team.

As weird as this sounds, I felt the Lindor error actually kept the Padres off the scoreboard. With one and Cronenworth running on the pitch, Tatis hits a grounder to Lindor whose only play was to first, but the bobbled it. So, it left first and second and one out. The next hitter was Hosmer who flared one into LF for a single loading the bases. Had Lindor made the play against Tatis, with two outs Cronenworth is running on contact and would have scored on the flare hit. With DeGrom having a chance to escape the inning scoreless, he took advantage of that.

Jake clips showed a lot of breaking stuff. Cool.

Edwin 102 on the black. Put it in the books.

That Lugo curvy was nasty - that elbow is fine - worth the wait.

Lindor is hot. HOT! He looks like that week in spring training again.

Whoever decided on Villar/Pillar deserves an Oscar. Peraza too. Three Season Savers.

My only disappointment last nite was Kershaw not whipping the Braves.

Mets only plate 4 runs, but I love the 13 hits. Players are all-too-aware of their batting averages, and hits restore and boost them.

Amazing that in his first 9 starts in 1968, Gibson threw 80.2 innings.

Could Jake end up with a sub 1.00 ERA - a lot of course depends on the bullpen. How many of his career runs were guys he left on base that relievers allowed to score? Lots. Not this year.

From the other night, I was very happy with the Khalil Lee trade. You have to give up something and those may become good players, but at 22 in AAA, Lee is hitting .333 and playing CF. Yes, he wasn’t ready for the majors but he wasn’t chasing, just couldn’t hit the high strike. He needs to fix that but the strike zone is expected to come down. Hopefully he can turn into a good MLB player, but the price was acceptable when you add a top ten prospect for two in the #’s 15-25 range.

Tom, just 58 strikeouts in those 80 innings. It’s harder to keep a lower ERA if you pitch nine innings as you are obviously tired. The man deserves the recognition.

I agree. Gus, on Khalil Lee, although I ragged on him, Maybin, and Almora a lot.

Unlike the other two, he got rushed. Lee really needed about 500 ABs in AAA to be ready. I agree with you that he could be a solid future major leaguer.

Also, Gibby probably pitched more to contact with the intent of completing games, in an era where completing games was considered drastically more important. Man, he completed 28 of 34 that year!

Jake throws harder than he did, although Gibby in 1968 was hi 90s. But his slider was a killer.

If Gibby pitched today, he would be fanning 11 or 12 per 9.

A few rambling rumblings from Remember

- I also agree with Gus and Tom on Khalil Lee. I think he will turn into a good major league outfielder, but needs the MiLB at-bats to really develop.

- I think Villar may be one of the most important members of this year's team. Seems to up up big in the moments most needed.

- Too early on the Kelenic chatter. Probably another case of K. Lee. More seasoning needed. I think that trade will turn out just fine for both team. Diaz will be the guy for the next 4 years and Kelenic will be a good major leaguer.

- deGrom. . not much more to say, although I am a bit worried about that many pitches over 100.

- Lindor: yes, I do believe his turn-around is real and he will continue to rake. He will be worth that contract well before it expires.

- Yup, that was a nasty curve by Lugo - good to see him back. Another weapon in that long season.

- I was kind of surprised that Sid Fernandez was 4th in K's in the team record books. I always liked him, but had forgotten he was around long enough to climb that high.

Let's get another win today and head to Baltimore!

Lots?

Really?

Tom, I don't think your claim is remotely true. What is it based on?

I can scarcely recall a time when Jake was knocked out of the game, leaving mid-inning with runners on base. You are saying it's happened a lot, for "lots" of runs to score?

In my memory, Jake almost always leaves the game after completing an inning, due to pitch count. Outside of extremely rare situations, when would a manager pull Jake from a tough situation . . . if favor of any other pitcher on the planet?

Again, I don't think there's any truth to your statement.

I mean, do you?

A quick look at Jake's game logs from all of 2020 and 2021, 21 games in all, show (almost certainly) that Jake was NEVER removed mid-inning. It's possible that he entered an inning and failed to record a single out, and was pulled, knocked out of the box. But I sure remember it!

Re: what will always be known as "The BVW Trade", I remember thinking (or perhaps even writing) at the time that "I hate to see them trade #1 picks and wonder if they could have swung that without Kelenic somehow, but getting the best closer in the business and a good professional hitter on the cusp of the Hall of Fame is a good thing. Overall, I'd make this trade"

After two and a half years, I'm still OK with it, in spite of Diaz struggles in 2019 and Cano's stupidity. Diaz will be under team control another 3 or 4 years and is turning back into a good one - I am optimistic about him for the long haul.

As far as Kelenic, I don't care what he does. I don't wish bad on any young player, and if he turns into Mike Trout II, so be it. That's baseball. You gotta give to get.

And yes, they shed a bunch of salary weight with the washed up Bruce and Swarzak. I don't think Dunn will ever be a top of the line starter.
