Mets Links:

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ ‘grand plan’ has turned around their defense. “Through a combination of increased emphasis on analytics — resulting in shifts — better communication and improved players, the Mets have been a success story defensively this season. In each of the previous four seasons, the Mets were negative in defensive runs saved, never ranking better than 24th in MLB, as computed by The Fielding Bible. They entered Monday with 35 runs saved, which was tied for second in MLB, behind only the Rays.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: Nothing makes sense about this first-place Mets team. “…with more than 35 years experience covering this sport, I really cannot explain why the Mets are in first place. Well, some of it is explicable. The top three starters have been brilliant, with deGrom the ace of the sport. The defense has been so much better than in recent years. The division, quite frankly, stinks.”

In explaining “the little brother mindset, Tim had this quote from Jeremy Barnes: “’We do want our players to get stretched, we do want them to have to work through things,’ Barnes said. ‘If the first time they ever have to face adversity is in the big leagues, we’ve failed them as a development program.’”

MLB.com: One trade chip for every MLB team. For the Mets they suggest Ronny Mauricio. ” Francisco Lindor’s commitment to stay in Queens through 2031 means Mauricio must either find a new position or a new team.”

SNY.TV: 5 things to watch as Mets and Orioles play two-game set in Baltimore. Matt Harvey against the Mets Part 2 and the return of Jonathan Villar are among the things to keep an eye on.

SNY.TV: 10 ridiculous Jacob deGrom stats as Mets ace continues to reach new heights. DeGrom's league-leading ERA is just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the items include: “99.3 mph average fastball velocity, 8 walks all season, 14.43 K/9”

NY Post: Jacob deGrom’s Mets teammates defend him against Twitter cheating allegation.

1965
In the inaugural free-agent draft of high school and college players, the Mets' first pick is southpaw Les Rohr, who due to an arm injury compiles only a 2-3 career mark pitching for the team in parts of three seasons. Later in the day, New York makes a better choice, selecting future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan in the eighth round.
1968
The Giants' Bat Day at Candlestick Park is postponed when the Mets refuse to play their scheduled game in San Francisco, out of respect for recently assassinated New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy, whose funeral is being held today. Prompted by baseball commissioner William Eckert's edict to cancel games only taking place in New York and Washington, the team, led by first baseman Ed Kranepool, had voted to take this action, even under the threat of forfeiting the contest, a decision that is fully supported by manager Gil Hodges and the organization.

2007
With their 3-0 victory over Detroit at Comerica Park, the Mets begin a span of 18 games to become the first team in baseball history to play six consecutive series against six different clubs that all participated in the playoffs the previous season. New York will compile an 8-10 record during the stretch playing against the Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees, Twins, A's, and the Cardinals.
2011
The Mets select Brandon Nimmo as the 13th overall player chosen in the MLB June Amateur Draft, making him the first Wyoming student ever to be picked in the first round. The 18 year-old, who could not play for a Cheyenne East HS team because the Equality State does not offer high school baseball programs, batted .448 with fifteen home runs and 34 stolen bases in 70 games for his American Legion Post 6 club.

2016
Kelly Johnson becomes the only second player in baseball history to be traded from one team to another in consecutive seasons when the Mets obtained him from the Braves for minor league right-hander Akeel Morris and cash. Backstop Chad Kreuter was dealt by the White Sox to the Angels in 1997 and then again in 1998.

1965 - Arizona State star sophomore Rick Monday, selected by the Kansas City Athletics, is the first player chosen in the initial major league free-agent draft of high school, college, and sandlot players. Picking second, the Mets take pitcher Les Rohr. In the 10th round, they finally take Nolan Ryan. Cincinnati picks Johnny Bench in the second round.

2013: For only the second time in major league history, two games go 18 innings on the same day. First, the Blue Jays defeat the Rangers, 4 - 3, when Rajai Davis drives in Emilio Bonifacio with a two-out single in the 18th inning. Ross Wolf is the unlucky loser after 6 2/3 innings of work. It's the longest game in both teams' history, but it's not even the longest on the day, as the Marlins need 20 innings to defeat the Mets, 2 - 1, tying for the longest game in their history, and the longest played at Citi FieldAdeiny Hechevarria drives in the go-ahead run and Steve Cishek gets the final out after 6 hours and 20 minutes. The game almost ends in the 12th, but Marlins RF Marcell Ozuna throws Daniel Murphy out at the plate to prolong the game. Starters Shaun Marcum and Kevin Slowey then come in to pitch in the 13th, and both pitch scoreless ball until the 20th. Marcum falls to 0-7 in spite of his tremendous effort.

Luis Guillorme and Nolan Ryan both 10th round draft picks? Luis in good company.

Liked the Cyclone video clip of Baty, Alvarez, and Mauricio. Now lets get one of Montes de Oca and Metoyer.

Jeremy Barnes: “’We do want our players to get stretched, we do want them to have to work through things,’ Barnes said. ‘If the first time they ever have to face adversity is in the big leagues, we’ve failed them as a development program.’” MY THINKING EXACTLY. Challenge your good guys more - they'll grow faster. Kind of like having advanced placement type classes for the brightest kids.

I want Mauricio, Baty and Alvarez all in AAA by this time next year.

Not only has Kelenic failed so far:

Sam McWilliams has had one outing for his new team...2/3 of an inning, 3 walks, a HB, and no Ks. Not sorry to see him go.

Mauricio just turned 20 in April. He has 34 Ks and 4 walks this season, his first at A+ level. You want him in AAA next year?

Alvarez is a catcher, 19 years old, just learning the finer points of the position. You want him in AAA next year?

You aren't making sense.

Thanks Tom...love that Cyclones clip as well.

Sam McWilliams...didn't he have a 9 ERA at AAA before the Mets gave him $750K? I guess the Padres thought it was a good gamble.

Scott Kingery signed for $28M and cleared waivers...no one was touching that one. Kelenic turned down the Mariners extension...who is sorry now?

Jimmy - as always great points.

Nick Meyer has been very impressive with the hitting and catching in AAA and AA so far this year. Not getting a lot of playing time behind Senger in AA but someone who's catching ability could land him in the Major Leagues...rule 5 draft eligible this winter.
