St. Lucie Mussels defeat Mets 9-4



 O’Neill goes 2 for 2, hits first home run of the season

 

FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 5, 2021) – The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels took advantage of seven errors by the St. Lucie Mets to win Saturday’s contest 9-4 at Hammond Stadium.

 

The Mets had leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the middle of the first and second innings respectively, but the Mussels tied the game in the bottom of each inning on unearned runs after errors.

 

The Mussels took the lead for good in the fourth inning with two runs. Edouard Julien hit a ball to left-center field that was dropped by Alex Ramirez, allowing Kyle Schmidt to score and make it 4-3. A ground out by Keoni Cavaco plated another run.

 

Schmidt reached on an error to start the sixth inning and came around to score on a sac fly for a 6-3 lead.

 

Another sac fly by Misael Urbina made it 7-3 in the seventh. Schmidt hit a RBI triple to cap the scoring for the Mussels later in the frame.

 

Matt O’Neill launched a 420-foot home run for the Mets in the ninth inning. He went 2 for 2 and walked twice.

 

Mets starter Junior Santos was charged with five runs, but only one earned, over four solid innings.

 

Liam McCall pitched two hitless innings and allowed one unearned run.

 

Brendan Hardy tossed 1.1 scoreless innings.

 

The Mussels have won six in a row while the Mets have lost five straight.

 

The Mets (16-13) and Mussels (16-13) conclude their six-game series at Hammond Stadium on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.

I'm glad this article says Junior Santos threw 4 solid innings. With the unearned runs, hard to tell.
