Observations from Mack - Update on Pitching

Good morning.

One of the participants (and writer of Mack’s Mets) on my group feed asked me to do an update on whether  or not the Mets have anyone in the chain that throws from the mound that can help this team this year.

Let’s first go through the possible options and then we’ll sum up, but we don’t need to look past Syracuse. There is no one at the AA level that can help this team right now.

Stats stated here are through Friday's games.

The options are:

Jose Butto - RHSP  AAA -

AAA stat line -  7-starts, 1-1, 6.82,-ERA 1.68-WHIP, 30.1-IP, 28-K

Frankly, this is not much of an option right now. He seems incapable of  pitching at the level he’s at now, no less in the majors where he has never had any success.

                                                (PC - Dove-mon)

David Peterson - LHSP  AAA

AAA stat line -  3-starts, 1-1, 4.08-ERA, 1.58-WHIP, 17.2-IP, 28-K

Another frank discussion. Yes, he has had his good moments in Syracuse this season, but he has reeked at the major league level. I mean, consistently reeked. He can’t possibly have the confidence to do this again right now. And frankly, I have no confidence in him either.

Joey Lucchese - LHRP - AAA

AAA stat line - 6-ST, 3-1, 2.76,-ERA 1.26-WHIP, 32.2-IP, 30-K

Not the best option, but the best this team has right now. Yes, he has an AAA stat line this year of 5-starts, 3-0, 1.95, but his last four outings for the parent Mets resulted in him giving up 11 runs in 15.1-IP. Then came the 5-inning, 5-run clunker this past Wednesday. This is like Corey Oswalt revisited.  And this is the best starter option right now, Phew.

Relievers:

Josh Walker - LHRP - AAA

AAA stat line -  13-APPS, 2-1, 1.53-ERA, 1.24-WHIP, 17.2-IP 24-K

Let me start with the fact that I like this guy. He only has been given one major league opportunity this season (1-IP, 0-R, 0-K, 2-BB, 0.00), but he has pitched very well for Syracuse this season. Frankly, after looking at some of the current ERAs of relievers in the Mets pen, I have no idea why Walker isn’t there with them.

Zach Muchenhirm - LHRP - AAA

AAA stat line - 11-APPS, 0-1, 1.19-ERA, 1.06-WHIP, 22.2-IP, 12-K

Another guy that should be currently in the Mets pen. Doing a good job in Syracuse and was very impressive during two outings for the Mets so far this season: 3.2-IP, 2-K, 2.45, 0.1-WAR). SMH.

Nathan Lavender - LHRP - AAA

AAA stat line - 7-APPS, 0-1, 4.15-ERA, 1.61-WHIP, 8.2-IP, 12-K

Started the season in Binghamton, where he pitched well, but he has been blowing up lately, Case in point: on Memorial Day, he gave up 2-ER in 1-IP, raising his season ERA to 4.15 (1.16-WHIP). Long shot to be called back up right now.

T J McFarland - LHRP AAA

AAA stat line: 18 APPS, 2-2, 2.70-ERA, 1.46-WHIP, 26,2-IP, 29-K

Coming on as of late. The most AAA appearances of the entire staff. Hmm...

Lavender has 34 Ks in 20 AA and AAA innings, amazing, but his AAA walks are escalated. Almost there, in a very rapid ascent.

Matt Allan, Bryce Montes de Oca, and Ryley Gilliam are not ready. At all.

Remember the hub bub over the Mets trading Kevin Smith? Orioles released him from the minors in 2022. Tommy Wilson? Hasn’t pitched in the minors since 2021.

It's almost impossible to believe doing anything more than maybe making the playoffs w/o upgrading the BP with the loss of ED getting bigger by the day (have they outlawed players playing in the WBC yet) but the real problem is there's simply too many inning's needed from the BP on a daily basis. When they came up with the line "a quality start is 6 innings allowing 3 runs or less it set a precedent so just the thought of paying 2 pitchers 86 million year to give us maybe 20 starts apiece is just insane with burnout a given short of adjusting the roster to allow for deeper pitching staffs. The other big problem of course is where are all these much needed additional pitchers gonna come from? We're only in the beginning of June and our BP is exhausted and the powers that be haven't figured this out yet? You would think Lindor for example would maybe try hitting just from the right side based on his terrible left/right splits but the "he'll come around" line must be ringing in his head. Hey it's worth a try.

Gary

This is why you have to sign and draft many more pitchers than bats.

Less than one in seven develop

Gary, we have Joey and Davey in AAA. Two secret weapons…or are they double agents?

Time to start planning for next year. Even if we make the playoffs as a wildcard team, we would be headed to an early exit.

The problem is the hitting! You don’t win many games when you score 3 or less runs. The second problem is th starters, how many times have they failed to go 6 innings? Sure bottom of the BP could be better but if they score 4+ runs and the starters go 6+ innings things would be better. Play Vientos, bring up Mauricio.
