Reese Kaplan -- When Will Anything Change for the Mets?

It's gotten to the point where Mets fans are more aggravated and annoyed watching Mets games than they are supportive and enthusiastic about their chosen team's fate in the standings.  Right now it's gotten to the point where the club falling any more than 2 runs behind is often an inducement to find another way to spend the next few hours rather than suffering through additional collapses of arms and bats that have led to the below .500 outcomes.  

So what do we do about it?

Well, for starters, play the kids.  Understand that despite having set a record in payroll, all is not right in Metsville and the only thing that will regenerate interest is something new and different with the arrival of young players forcing non performing veterans to the bench.  Everyone already knows what Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha and even a seemingly temporarily revived Daniel Vogelbach can do.  However, they don't know what Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio and others from the farm are capable of doing if inserted into the lineup and allowed to play rather than simply sitting on the bench. 

Unfortunately, there is no near term solution when it comes to prospective pitchers in the upper minors.  For now the other question is who would they replace?  Yes, Tylor Megill is very much expendable but for now Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Carlos Carrasco, Kodai Senga and the near arrival of Jose Quintana suggest that unless trades are made you're looking at the starting rotation for the remainder of this difficult season.  It's not as if David Peterson and company down there are pounding on the door demanding a promotion to Queens.  Joey Lucchesi might be the short term exception, but it would appear right now his future is not going to be in blue and orange.  

Given the choice, I would sooner see the best of A, AA and AAA as it represents hope and potential for the future.  Right now we are seeing how the regulars are doing and they are not filling us with pride nor joy.  Obviously a 20 year old kid may not be ready to face the best of the best as a hitter or throwing from the mound as a pitcher but it is fresh, it is new and it is something we'd like to see.  

It's been a long time since Mets fans have tolerated the constant losing and mediocrity day in and day out.  Back then it was the Wilpon regime of AAAA players and over-the-hill retreads who didn't cost an arm and a leg.  It was Terry Collins benching talented younger players after good games to make room for the Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Omar Quintanilla and Eric Campbell types.  That strategy made Collins the losingest manager in club history, but somehow the Mets hung onto him and his mediocrity long after Michael Conforto, Yoenis Cespedes and Matt Harvey propelled the Mets into the unlikely 2015 post season.  Then when faced up with a similarly disrespected manager for the Royals, the Mets totally fell apart under Collins' leadership.

Now we have a different issue with one of the best managers in the game, players who at their prime were once very good and yet the losing has a bad flashback feeling.  In this case it is not the manager at fault unless he's not been directed by the stats guys and the GM to continue to play the worst of the worst instead of trying something different.  Right now it appears to be issues of front office failure and player execution that add up to the losing record. 

What is being done about it?  Anything?  Bueller???
