Tom Brennan - The Edwin Absence Impact

Ever so sorely missed.

Quite a few people don't know really how to analyze, according to my analyst.

They say, for instance. that David Robertson as closer is almost equal to 2022 Edwin Diaz.

A false analysis.

The REAL consideration is:

What would this Mets bullpen be with both Robertson and a healthy Diaz.

I see it like this:

Diaz had a 1.31 ERA last year, 3.1 record, and 32 of 35 in saves, and he repeatedly crushed, humiliated, and snuffed opponents to the tune of a blistering 118 Ks in 62 innings.

This year, those lost innings are not being replaced by Roberston, who would have been the 8th inning guy.

No, the Diaz brilliant innings are being replaced in essence by the guys who have pitched here in 2023 who would not have even pitched here if Edwin was pitching and compiling innings. And those fringe guys have been awful, frankly. Awful again last night.

And the FORGED STEEL that Diaz added to the 2022 bullpen backbone is missing.  Very sorely missing.

With Edwin, teams would have seen the Mets' pen as a mortal threat.

Why?  Because it WOULD BE.

Instead, it is viewed by opponents as thin and mediocre. "We stay close through 6, and we'll overtake these patsies. We have a lead, we're home free."

That is the impact.

My wild guess is the Mets would have 5 more wins so far with Edwin's STEEL in the bullpen.  Not based on anlaysis - just gut.

In other words, the 2023 New York Mets team would be competitive, rather than circling the drain.

Of course, the brutal starting rotation (low innings, 5.07 ERA) is greatly culpable. Awful again last night, right, Mr. Megill, who may need a refresher course in pitching at Syracuse University.

You starters can’t say to an Edwin-less pen, “hey guys, we sucked again, so can you relievers pitch the 2nd half of this game, too?”

No Edwin to call upon, sadly, so the rest of you hurlers can stop doing your best impressions of the 1962 Mets staff, and start pitching like normal pitchers. Not a staff that’s allowed 310 runs in 64 games.

We've really taken SUCK to another level and for me they QUIT last night and what's Eppy gonna do about it? Hey we could have had Hill for 1 year and 8 million and by the way Sanchez could be our DH and oh by the way we did have him and a guy named JD Davis as well so it must be just bad mojo with Eppy and the DH spot. I also was soooooo relieved to find out Nido is back in the organization and I hope you are too but I am just amazed by how much conversation and ink and time was wasted on a guy with a .213 lifetime avg. and no power. Now that the wheels have truly fallen off what the plan will be and how long till Ronnie Mo is up and Vogy is dumped.

Vogelbach will be gone when average drops below 200 according to reports.

Woodrow, series over, maybe Vogie is gone today? Problem is, Mauricio has been cold this month.
