Tom Brennan - A Tale of Two Mets Slugging Catchers; Zeroes to Heroes and Vice Versa

YOUNG….AND FEROCIOUS

In late April, the naysayers and nattering nabobs of negativism? Well, they sure weren’t happy with Francisco Alvarez.

Heading into a 6th inning at bat against San Francisco,Alvy was 3 for 25 with no HRs.

Well, on at bat # 26, he launched his first of the season.

Over his last 111 at bats, TWELVE HRs! A HR every 9.2 at bats.

And a superb 31 for 111.

Through all those dark clouds, a brilliant light is shining.

Just one thing to fix, Pete Alonso reminded me…

Just 2 Alvy HRs at Citifield in 53 at bats, but 10 in just 83 at bats on the road.

Citi Sux.

JULIO ZAYAS

I did say TWO catchers, right?

Julio ZAYAS is a 17 year old Mets catcher in the DSL, whom you’ve likely never heard of.

You’re about to now.

Sit down for safety. Check this out…

In his first 16 pro at bats, 2 singles, 4 doubles, 2 HRs, 7 RBIs. Slug % 1.125.

OBP: 1.625!

How’s THAT for your first 4 pro games?

Remarkable.

ZEROES TO HEROES, AND VICE VERSA

The initially despised Pham, Canha, Marte, and Escobar, who were collectively comatose for several weeks, have done this in the last 15 games:

41 for 120 (.340), 6 HRs, 27 RBIs.

Zeroes to Heroes.

On the flip side, in the last 15, Alonso and Lindor are 16 for 86 (.186) with 7 HRs and 9 RBIs.

Heroes to zeroes.

That’s baseball.

On the Alonso/Lindor stats, if that does not scream to take a day off here and there and be available to pinch hit, I don't know what does.

Each if healthy should start 150 games and pinch hit the other 12. My guess is their season stats would be higher.

Only one way to find out how good the kids are.

Speaking of another former "kid", Dom Smith is hitting .260, but has 9 lives. What other MLB 1B could hit 1 HR in his last 475 at bats and still be employed?

This falls under "if we only knew". Smith taken at #11 and Judge at 32 and imagine Pete and Aaron and now Alvy in the middle of the lineup...Ok I woke up. Now on our recent big money signing's I certainly hope it's just the weight of the new contract but Jeffy really needs to step up his game to not turn into Luis Castillo the sequel one of the biggest headscratcher contract's under Omar's reign.

Gary, with McNeil, it has been offensive mediocrity so far this year in the first 40% of the season. He absolutely torched it the last 10 weeks last year, though. How about a second half repeat?

It seems there is only one Arraez.

Wild Man Jace Beck pitched for Brooklyn yesterday. 1.1 innings, 4 walks, 3 Ks.

SEASON? 15.2 innings, 19 walks, 35 Ks. LOL. Insane #’s. Leathersich on steroids.
