The 2023 rookie ball season is under way!
10 games in, and our Mets lads in the Florida Complex League (FCL), which is one professional rung above the rambunctious DSL, are hitting a mere .227 and scoring 42 runs.
The Mets' offense and the word “mere” seem to have synonymous qualities all too frequently.
Yanks?
First, before I tell you, you need to guess….are they better or worse?

If you are intelligent, as I believe you to be, the answer is, of course…
The FCL Yankees are better offensively! Much better! (Surprise!)
Just like in the DSL.
The FCL Yankees, in point of fact, are scoring 78 runs in 10 games and hitting .277, so there is, as happens almost always, a gaping disparity betwixt the two franchises.
The Yankees’ John Cruz has 10 hits in 9 games….and of course a Ruthian 19 RBIs. (The entire DSL Nationals team, I noted the other day, had scored 16 runs, so 19 RBIs in 9 games is a LOT).
The FCL Mets’ Diego Mosquera and Yohairo Cuevas are hitting well, too - but only have 5 combined RBIs.
The FCL Mets have 3 HRs, while 4 teams have 10 or more and one Astros slugger has 6 all by himself.
Bonus big bucks babies Simon Juan (.200, 1 RBI) and Willie Fanas (.143, 5 RBIs) are struggling in the early FCL action.
It’s complex, I get it.
The Yank's 2 DSL teams and its FCL team have scored 254 runs in a total of 30 games. 8.5 runs per game.
The Mets' 2 DSL teams and its FCL team have scored 172 runs in a total of 30 games. 5.7 runs per game.
That's 2.8 runs per game less...SMH.
After all, the 1968 NY Mets averaged around 2.8 runs per game, so 2.8 on top of what you are scoring is a LOT of extra runs.
And I would not be surprised if each of the top 4 levels' Mets teams are scoring a lot less than the Yanks' teams. In fact, the top 4 Mets teams have scored 161 runs less than the Yanks' top 4 teams, 155 of those at the 3 levels below AAA which have not been infiltrated by former MLB veterans.
Q.: What does that say about the Mets' player selection. vs. Yanks?
Do Mets management fellas and fillies ever seriously ask themselves that question?

The FCL Mets’ 4.34 ERA is 4th out of 15 teams, though.
Slightly better than the FCL "D..n Yankees", who were at 4.50.
Shocking, I know. Mets did BETTER there, even if only slightly.

One of the Mets minor league coaches told be that the Mets basically tear down all the FCL players and then rebuild them the way they see fit.Arm. Swing.Positions. Whatever.
For this reason alone, it is impossible to analyze at this level
Makes sense, M ack. But the top 4 minors teams have scored 161 less than the Yanks’ top 4. Mostly in AA and A ball, where veterans don’t taint results. So something is not right. Yanks do it better.

They spend more Internationally
The Yankees have been doing this better for a long time. If they ask a very young player who they would play for, the Yankees or the Mets. He probably would answer the Yankees because they are worldwide famous. An international draft I think would benefit the Mets over teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Atlanta.

We need to be a major player in the signing of International prospects.I know it is a "crap shoot", but it is a gold mind for future prospects.
D J, I still think that going with super high dollar prospects is the best way to go. We’ve had too many Gregory Guerrero types by spending 2 million rather than throwing the whole boatload of cash at somebody for 5 million. When the international sweepstakes get the best player that’s out there, in other words, the number one overall.
