Tom Brennan - The Pen's Not So Bad; Pham on Phire; Oleo; Nearly No-No's

THERE'S NO VINO LIKE OTTAVINO.

HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE!

Lots of Facebook fans were screaming for Adam Ottavino's scalp lately.

If not him, they'd want someone else's scalp.  That's how they roll.

So, since a valued pen member was being castigated and vilified, I looked at save opportunities baseball-wide, and for the Mets, that did not end in successful saves.

How'd our bullpen woolie bullies do vs. other teams' pens’ snorting bovines?

The Mets, going into Tuesday's action?

Converted 18 of 26 in save opportunities.

Close to the best.

Chicago has only failed to convert 6 opportunities, but they are 10 of 16.

Two teams have failed to convert 7 opportunities.

27 teams have failed to convert 8 or more opportunities.

Some have actually blown many more saves than the Mets.

So, despite the lack of Edwin, that saves % result is not at all bad, in large part due to the fine work of King David Robertson.

LAST 30 DAYS

Man, early in the year, I hammered the sputtering Tommy Pham.

"35 years old...is the dude washed up??”

I was right on the age part, but dead wrong on the washed-up part.

What I did not know is how fiercely determined he was to work his way out of that early slump.

It paid off.

In his last 30 days, 62 at bats, .322/.368/.661 18 RBIs.

Over the same 30 days, purely pleasant a point of reference, Lindor was just .174/.263/.453 with 17 RBIs in 86 ABs.

Glad they kept Pham.  He ain't Ruf.  Younger, too.

He's PHAM-ulous, actually.

OLEO IS GREAT:

Some prefer smooth, creamy butter.

I prefer Oleo. Bran too.

Branny de Oleo is an 18 year old Mets SS in the DSL, off to an especially sizzling season start. As in 15 for 32 (.467), including 5 doubles, a HR, and 10 ribbies, 2 steals, 2 walks, and just 2 Ks, and just 1 error so far.

One to watch, clearly. You’ll find him in your grocer’s dairy section

METS INCONSISTENCY

The laddies hit a ton Monday night, leaving fans emboldened, then nearly get no hit the next night. Fans sullen.

Justin Verlander has lost 4 games in 2022 and 2023, but the little inconsistency here is the 2 wins in 2023 vs. 18 wins in 2022.

2-4, but everyone wonders whether the Mets should send down Tylor Megill, who is 6-4 (and 6'7").

Do not become enamored with "ERA", which is just an average.  In his 6 wins, Tylor sports a 2.18 ERA.  Yeah, his other 8 starts (0-4) his ERA is about 7.20, but he's won 6 because he's pitched really well in those 6.  And his 6 wins are tied for 23rd best in baseball.

Mets’ 2023 Motto:

You Win One, You Lose One…Then You Lose Some More. And Some More.

NO NO-NO, NANETTE:

Kevin Parada broke up a no hitter in the 9th.1-0 loss, 4 total hits by the two teams. Of course it was played IN Brooklyn, the land of the hitless.  Had it been a road game, the two teams probably would have had 27 hits and a 10-9 score.

Binghamton starter Luis Moreno (5-2), meanwhile, went 5 no-hit innings, walking just one and fanning 9, in what ultimately became a 2 hitter for Bingo pitchers. Last 3 starts for Luis, 3 earned runs in 18 innings, 26 Ks.

Whaddya think, Mack? Blue?

And speaking of hitless...

VIENTOS HITLESS

Syracuse was hitless as well, due to being rained out in Durham. So that thunder last night was Mother Nature, not from Mark’s bat.  THAT thunder is coming.  Take shelter.

Just finished playing 18. Wonder if this Moreno is a legitimate prospect. We have so few of them.
