5-20-12 - Daily Mets Minors Report

Date: 5-20-12

Tillman Pugh and I talked yesterday. He headed out this morning, via car, from Savannah to his home in California, but was signed by the White Sox before he hit I10… reporting to the team extended camp in Arizona

The release was not health related. He was 100%, came to Savannah as the 5th outfielder, got 59 at bats, and was cut. You can reach out to him on Facebook under his name, Tillman Pugh.

Say a prayer for Michael G. Baron, of MetsBlog, who is down for the count with pneumonia.

SP Bret Mitchell had successful shoulder surgery yesterday. I talked to him while the drugs were wearing off:

“Surgery went great. The hard part is over now and every step I take I will be moving forward to be better than ever. Thank you very much for your support.”

I’ve been asked when SP Logan Verrett will come off the IR and get back to the Gnats bump. When reached, he was short but sweet:

“Hopefully, in the next week and a half.”

Howard Megdal‏ -

Ike Davis, so far: bad for the Jews.

AAA-Buffalo:

SP Chris Schwinden was flown off to Toronto. He is on the Mets taxi squad awaiting word on Miquel Batista’s injury.

Wally Backman announced that Jack Egbert will start Sunday’s game.

IF Jordany Valdespin was finally returned to Buffalo so he can play every day.

SP Jeurys Familia on the bump… hitting 99…

Back-to-back home runs in the 3rd by the Italian Stallions, Rotino and Pascucchi…

Ben Wagner‏ -

The last 3 HR's by @PoppaValentino have carried over 1,500 feet

Indianapolis chase Familia with three in the fourth: 3.2-IP, 5-H, 4-R, 3-K. 4-BB, 4.35…

Mike Harrington‏ -

Remain underwhelmed by Mets prospect Familia. Out after 3 2/3 tonight in 4-4 game. Walked 4, 87 pitches and just 49 strikes… And he is the SLOWEST pitcher in the history of history…

Oh Christ… Anderson Hernandez (.179) plays for them…

Ha ha… Jordany Valdespin pinch hits… and homers…

AA-Binghamton:

RHP Erik Turgeon placed on DL. RHP Jenrry Mejia transferred to Binghamton...

RHSP Jenrry Mejia started, gave up a first inning home run, settled down (: 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. 48 pitches, 33 strikes.) and was pulled after three innings… ???  (Adam Rubin‏ - “Nothing obviously wrong with Mejia. Was sitting at 94-95 with solid curveball. Was throwing mostly from stretch because leadoff hitters on. I'll to have ask later. Could be easing into AA, keeping healthy for MLB start in 5 days, transitioning to relief workload, none of above”… Sandy Alderson said Jenrry Mejia was going to be capped at 50-60 pitches. Nothing wrong. “)

The B-Mets waited until the eight to score three, highlights by OF Raul Reyes’ (.170) 2-run homer… go figure.

Darin Gorski (a growing 4.28) gave up three runs in the 8th and had to be bailed out by Brad Holt (2.70)… who eventually gave up the tieing run and had to be bailed out by recent arrival Adrian Rosario (0.00, SV-1).

But, the B-Mets won in 10 after LF Pedro Zapata (.223) went yard.

A+ - St. Lucie: -

LHP Jack Leathersich and  INF Joe Bonfe transferred to St. Lucie.

I was surprised to see Yohan Almonte (5.23) getting another start…

Lucy came out swinging… someone is going to have to explain this to me:

Wilmer Flores pops out to first baseman James Robbins on the infield fly rule. Alonzo Harris scores. Robbie Shields scores. Cory Vaughn to 3rd.

Today seems to be the one day a year that C Frankie Pena hits…

Pedro Beato (0.00) pitched two scoreless rehab innings…

Kyle Allen (1.38) two scoreless innings, though he should be pitching AAA by now…

A – Savannah:

RHP Randy Fontanez & OF Gilbert Gomez transferred to Savannah....

OF Tillman Pugh was released.

RHSP Michael Fulmer started and got rocked for four runs in the fourth, which included his own throwing error… Savannah returned the favor with three of their own on hits by the hot Aderlin Rodriguez (.236) and hotter Brian Harrison (.254)…

In the fourth, SS Luis Nieves (.211) triples in Harrison (2nd hit - .259) and RF Charlie Thurber (.188).

Fulmer done after six, last five were shutout innings – 5-K, 3-BB, 3.48

Harrison now 3-3, 4-RBI, .264

Chasen Bradford – 2.0-IP, 0-R, 4-K

Mack, you think there's been any thought to switching positions for Harrison & Aderlin and move Aderlin to 1b and Harrison to 3b? Aderlin clearly cant stick at 3b long term and if he can learn to transition to 1b, I think it would go a long way for his development. Besides, Harrisoncan play a solid 3b anyway.

well, I can only tell you what I think is the reason... it's not like I communicate with any of these guys (sic)...

The Mets determined LAST year that Aderlin Rodriguez would return to Savannnah to play 3B again.

They had success doing these repeated years with guys like Juan Lagares, Wilmer Flores, and Jenry Marte. Young Latins take a little longer than American players the same age. Maybe it's the language, the customs, I don't know. I do know that the infielders grow up playing under horrible field conditions and ground balls bounce off rocks every play. They literally have no experience playing a grounder head on.

Anyway, Harrison played well in Savannah before but was injured and never got a starting slot back. It took him a year and a half to get back to Savannah where he leaarned that his natural position would be filled by A-Rod.

He became the first baseman by choice and the team agreed it would be a good move. An early slump this year didn't help, but the bat has since come around.

Harrison is a better defensive 3Bman than Aderlin. Well, my mother-in-law is a better third baseman than Aderlin.

I wasin the visiting dugout on opening home day this year and lineups came out. One of the visiting players looked at the Sand Gnats lineup, laughed, and said out loud "Rodriguez is on third... everyone can bunt now..."

That being said, he still has one of the top power swings in the organization. He hit a home run last week that might have gone 500 feet, but so did Brahiam Maldonado for 3 years. Like Maldo, he is not progessing on the field and will probably fade away into a DH player.

I expect Harrison to sty on first base now. There is no one in his way all the way to Queens. If he went back to thrid, he has Marte and Flores to deal with.

I thought Bret Mitchel had hip surgery according to his interview on another site? When did he tell you he had shoulder surgery? Is this a different injury?
