5-8-12 - Daily Mets Minors Report

Date: 5-8-12

It’ll be a shorter report tonight. My apologies.

The Mets are tied for the 9th best record… in both leagues.

The Mets have a better record than the Yankees, Phillies, Marlins and Angels

Jordany Valdespin (who may become ESPN’s most popular player since Cecil Espy) collected his first major league hit, a three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth to send the Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Phillies. The middle infielder didn’t show any power in the minors until 2011, when he hit 17 of his 33 MiLB homers. He’s now 1 for seven in the majors, with a slugging percentage over .500.

This isn’t the first time I have read someone write about the sudden spike in pop ‘Spin’ came up with last year. Anyone in the Mets organization tread lightly when they talk about Jordany. I was present when he was suspended in Savannah and I’ll leave it there, thank you.

AAA-Buffalo:

SS Omar Quintanilla is hitting .375 in his last 15 games…

Oswaldo Navarro goes from Binghamton to Buffalo (not a good sign for Michael Fisher).

The twitter world was lit up tonight after Miquel Batista blew up in Queens while Mike Harvey didn’t in Buffalo’s game against Gwinnett…

AA-Binghamton:

IF Joe Bonfe has been transferred for the 34.698 time this season, this time from Brooklyn to Binghamton (trust me, he never traveled a mile).

Nobody really gets excited about SP Mark Cohoon anymore; however, at the same time, he keeps doing things well…

A – Savannah:

John Sickles:

Michael Fulmer is making an impressive transition to full-season ball. He has a 3.18 ERA in his first five starts for Low-A Savannah in the Sally League, with a 20/6 K/BB in 23 innings and 20 hits allowed. This is a huge improvement over what he did in rookie ball last year, where he posted a 10.13 ERA in his first four pro outings. A supplemental first-round pick from high school in Edmond, Oklahoma, last June, Fulmer has a low-to-mid-90s fastball and an impressive slider. Refining his changeup and improving his command are the key items on his agenda this year, and so far things look good.

There’s no reason to rush Michael what with Harvey, Wheeler, Familia, and Mejia all ahead of him. My guess is he will remain under Frank Viola’s wing for the entire SAL season, and then be transferred to one of the other teams to help them in the playoffs.

I always felt the METS hurt Mark Cohoon, by rushing him through and skipping levels. Now, I feel he's placed where he should be. Maybe a promotion at the end of the season will be earned. After last night's game, he's pitched the most innings for the Bing. starters and has the lowest ERA. I hope this is pointing to getting the "old Mark" back.

Cohoon is one of those Dillon Gee-type pitchers that definitely deserves a shot at the end of some team's rotation.

The problem is he's not going to get it with the Mets.

The pitching floodgates begin to open next season with Harvey and Familia the first two out. Add to that the chance of both Mejia and Young coming back THIS YEAR... well, there won't even be room for Gorski.
