LAST GAME: Jefry Marte’s fielding error in the eighth inning set the table for New Britain’s four-run frame as the Rock Cats completed a two-game series sweep by defeating the Binghamton Mets 5-1 last night at NYSEG Stadium. The Rock Cats scored four unearned runs for the second straight night. Erik Turgeon gave up four hits, including three doubles, in the decisive inning and was saddled with his third loss. Collin McHugh took the no-decision, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings of work. Luis Perdomo pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his third win. The B-Mets scored their only run in the second on Juan Lagares’ RBI single off starter Steve Hirschfeld.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Zack Wheeler (1-2, 1.75) makes his sixth start of the season and third against the Fisher Cats. The Georgia native was reinstated from the disabled list earlier today after missing one start with a right middle fingernail avulsion. Wheeler has not allowed more than two runs in any of his previous starts and has not given up more than one since his Double-A debut. The righty collected his first Double-A win and surrendered just two hits in his last start against the Erie SeaWolves on April 29. Wheeler owns the fourth-best ERA in the Eastern League. In two starts against the Fisher Cats, Wheeler has gone 0-1 with a 0.82 ERA. New Hampshire has hit just .162 against him as a team.

RHP Chad Jenkins (2-2, 5.35) makes his seventh start of the season and third against the Binghamton Mets. Jenkins has gone six innings or more in all but one of his starts. He has taken the no-decision in his previous two games, both against the Trenton Thunder. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out one over six frames in his last start on May 4. The righty allowed eight runs on nine hits over 2.2 innings in a loss to the B-Mets on April 17, but bounced back by tossing six shutout innings against them in a win his next start on April 24. Jenkins was selected in the 1st round as the 20th overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Blue Jays out of Kennesaw State University.

POWER OUTAGE: The B-Mets completed their five-game homestand against the Harrisburg Senators and New Britain Rock Cats without hitting a home run. Their last longball was hit by Raul Reyes on May 3 against the Akron Aeros, a stretch spanning five games, 54.1 innings and 214 plate appearances. It is their longest homer-less streak since they failed to hit a dinger in five straight games in May 2010. Reyes’ home run is Binghamton’s only one in the last nine games.

A RARE STARTER GOPHERBALL: Wilkin Ramirez’s home run in the seventh inning off B-Mets pitcher Collin McHugh was the first homer allowed by a B-Mets starter in nearly two weeks. The previous gopher ball allowed was New Hampshire’s Mark Sobolewski with a three-run bomb off Greg Peavey on April 26.

GOING QUIETLY TO THE FINISH LINE: The B-Mets racked up three hits in a three-batter span in the second inning last night, but had just three more hits after that. In the two-game series, Binghamton hit just .105 (4-for-38) in the fourth inning and later.

NO HELP FROM THE OFFENSE: The B-Mets have compiled a 2.52 ERA in the month of May, the lowest in the Eastern League. They have hit just .238 as a team in the eight games in the month, the second-worst in the league. Their two wins and one home run in May puts them last in the league.

AGAINST THE FISHER CATS: The B-Mets match up against New Hampshire for the third of six series in 2012. The Fisher Cats have taken four of the first six games, including two of three at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The B-Mets have hit .266 as a team versus the Fisher Cats and compiled a staff ERA of 5.71. New Hampshire has hit .293 as a team, a number inflated by their 16-3 win on April 26.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-games series against the Fisher Cats tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. RHP Gonzalez Germen will make his second Double-A start against RHP Deck McGuire.
