B-Mets Blast Past Fisher Cats in SeriesFinale, 7-6


MANCHESTER,NH – The Binghamton Mets stroked three home runs, including a go-ahead blast byJefry Marte in the seventh, to defeat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7-6 Sundayafternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The three dingers matched aseason-high and helped Binghamton secure their first series win in the month ofMay.

Thesee-saw battle saw Binghamton grab the first lead using a two-out rally againststarter Randy Boone in the third. Rylan Sandoval started the charge with adouble and Pedro Zapata followed by reaching on Mark Sobolewski’s throwingerror from third base. Matt den Dekker extended his hitting streak to ninegames with a two-run double off the top of the right field fence.

TheFisher Cats had a quick rebuttal in the bottom of the third. With two outs anda runner on, Sobolewski hammered his league-leading eighth home run of theseason to left to tie the game. After a hit batsman and a single, Brian VanKirk gave the Fisher Cats the lead with a two-run double.

TheB-Mets answered back with a pair of longballs in the fifth. Sean Kazmar rippedhis first home run of the season to left field and Matt den Dekker tied thegame with a bomb off the batter’s ere in centerfield. Kazmar’s homer was hisfirst since July 2011.

NewHampshire took the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth with anothertwo-out hit. Brian Van Kirk laced a run-scoring single to plate Sobolewski,giving the Fisher Cats a 5-4 advantage. It was the final inning for Peavey whotook the no-decision, allowing five runs on seven hits over five frames.

Trailingby one with two men aboard in the sixth, B-Mets first baseman Travis Ozgadelivered. After going hitless in his first 16 at bats against the Fisher Catsin 2012, Ozga dumped an RBI single to right against reliever Danny Farquhar toscore Eric Campbell and knot the game at five.

Binghamtonbusted out the lumber again in the seventh against reliever Aaron Loup. Withtwo outs, Juan Lagares reached on a throwing error by Sobolewski at third, hissecond misplay of the game. Jefry Marte immediately made the Fisher Cats pay bylaunching a two-run homer to left to give Binghamton a 7-5 lead. It was Marte’sfirst home run with the B-Mets.

AfterArmando Rodriguez tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh, the Fisher Cats threatenedin the eighth by putting two men aboard with one out against Jeff Kaplan. Afterfalling behind Brian Jeroloman 1-0, Kaplan was replaced by Robert Carson.Fisher Cats manager Sal Fasano countered by pinch-hitting for Jeroloman withA.J. Jimenez. Jimenez popped out in foul territory to third and Justin Jacksonflied out to center to end the threat.

Itdid not get any easier for Carson in the ninth after two singles and a wildpitch put runners at second and third with one out. Mike McDade cut the deficitto one with a sac fly to right, but Brad Glenn stranded the game-tying run atsecond by striking out on three pitches. It was his eleventh strikeout of theseries.

ArmandoRodriguez (2-0) earned the win with his two frames of work and has not alloweda run in more than 13.0 innings on the hill. Aaron Loup (0-1) suffered hisfirst loss while Robert Carson collected his first career save.

TheB-Mets (17-18) will enjoy a day off Monday before starting a three-game seriesagainst the Trenton Thunder Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. The Horizons FederalCredit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
