EXCLUSIVE - Mets Will Be Buyers Before Trade Deadline

I just got off the phone with an old friend.

According to 'IT', the Mets are in the market for an established fifth starter to make a run for a playoff slot THIS season.

Word is that there is a great deal of excitement about the progress of Chris Young, Jenrry Mejia, and Matt Harvey; however, for different reasons, they would rather establish their rotation with someone already producing this season. Young and Mejia could then compete at various positions while Harvey continues to work on his control.

No names were shared, either regarding pitchers wanted or players being offerred, but the player pool the Mets would let a team pick from would all come from 'secondary level prospects', whatever they are.

I tried pressing, but that's all I could get in the dark, underground, parking garage... :)

Jeez... I've had this post up for around ten minutes and my phone has rung three times...

I'm not available for a comment.

Maybe it indicates a shift in organizational confidence as well. It would be a nice proactive move as I don't want the younger guys pitching for the club this season yet. I'd also like the Mets hold on to Dylan Owen. I still have hopes for him.

It's funny you mentioned Owen. I just wrote about him on another post.

I'd love to see him replace Batista for a couple games if for no other reason thatn the showcase him in a possible in-eason trade package.

The team seems much more confident that Mejia will return as a ++ force. Young is still a big long shot.

Great news on mejia.... Still I'd wait until June to think about tread deadline strategy... The team might be in a position to sell off extra parts and bolster the farm system and then make some real moves to buy in the offseason...still, I'm glad there is an atmosphere of confidence and winning returning to Queens

Michael:

Yeah, the one hting I walked away from that phonecall thinking was that I was talking to the 'old mets'... planning to bolster the team rather than sell off its assets.

Ya know, you offer a package of, let's say... Jenry Marte, Darin Gorski, and Dylan Owen...

You could get a pretty damn good pitcher and NOT hurt the nucleas of your system

The chips mentioned -- Marte (no place to play if Wright is retained), Owen (a very late bloomer if he isn't figured out shortly by the opposition), and Gorski (the one of that trio whose future is not murky nor blocked) could net a decent pitcher who is on the block such as Wandy Rodriguez. However, for what it would cost to pay him, wouldn't the money be better spent just signing Roy Oswalt?

Mack Ade said...

see... i like Oswalt, especially for an SP5 role.

But, I actually like Burnett more, but he's owed too much money/too long of a contract

What do u think about this trade, assuming of course everything is pretty similar closer to the deadline:

Marte, Den Decker, Gorski for Erik Berdard.

Do u think that would get it done?

Mack Ade said...

I not only think it could get done, but it also helps both teams.

the money is good (4.5mil), but the contract length Bedard's agent(FA 2013)

What does Young and Mejia " compete at various different positions mean?

Mack Ade said...

Young would compete as a possible SP4 vs. Gee while Mejjia would compete as a relief pitcher

Mack,

Quick question. What position player or two in your opinion at any Mets minor affliate has the best chance to make a real impact with the big club one day?

Mack Ade said...

Hmm...

right now, with who's left... no one.

It's too early to judge guys like Nimmo, Taijerson, and Evans.

Puello, Vaughn, den Dekker, Muno, Marte, and Havens have a shot.

My guess: Flores at 1B in 2014

I'll have to disagree on that one Mack. IMO Davis is going to be a mainstay at 1B for years to come. For me, Marte is trade bait NOW.

Flores' performance in St. Lucie is warranting a promotion and Marte is not going to be able to hold him off much longer. Your absolutely correct that 1B is written on the walls around him (perhaps as soon as late May when the first mass promotions are made).

Mack Ade said...

I think Davis is a big dud, but's that's just me...

I never understand if a team knows someone is going to wind up a first baseman, than why not play him there now.

Would it kill the Mets to have Flores and Marte in the same B-Mets lineup?

Michael S. said...

You absolutely could....I would just rather hold those chips and trade them for a long term solution

Michael S. said...

My thoughts exactly - sign Oswalt

A big dud??? Thats extremely pessimistic on Davis...I mean even now when he's not hitting he's still providing quality defense at 1B. Im pretty sure I dont have enough fingers to count how many throwing errors he's saved already this season.

I envision a .270 hitter with 20-25 HR a year as his peak. Not the greatest offensive 1B but his defense will make up the rest.

As for his slump...I have a gut feeling that he's due for a breakout soon. Probably not in Florida's monster stadium but I think the pre-fire smoke will be visible over the weekend.

Soto-san

woke your ass up with the dud commment, huh?

trust me, I hope I'm wrong...

you might remember that I hated this pick and begged the Mets to pick the 1B that actually was picked with the next pick in the draft...

Alan Dykstra

I don't buy this mindset just yet. It's far too early to begin conversations about acquisitions based on there performance thus far. I can see them maybe saying, "What if we are still in contention...Should we pickup an upgraded 5th starter?" The way I see it, Chris Young is the answer here and will definitely be ready and pitching for our Mets weeks before the trade deadline. It would be surprising to see the Mets jump the gun and fall into the same trench they've been trying to climb out of.

Mack Ade said...

I don't think the Mets will jump any gun...

what they have done is let the baseball world know that they are alive and well and would love to discuss with anyone that has an SP available.
