FLASH: Former 1st Round Pick, 2B Reese Havens, Retires

According to ESPN's Adam Rubin via Twitter, former 1st round pick 2B Reese Havens has retired from baseball.

Havens was a former "can't miss" prospect that was supposed to be the Mets second baseman of the future. As a talented hitter, he had the potential to be a true "complete" player with projections of 20+ HR, .300 AVG and above average defensive capabilities. Unfortunately numerous injuries including a lower spinal injury de-railed his career as he never could complete a full season of baseball.

Havens finishes his career as a .252 hitter with 43 career HRs in the minor leagues in 345 games. His retirement leaves 2B for the Las Vegas 51's unmanned going into 2014.

We here at Mack's Mets wish him the best in his future endeavors and his future health

Its a shame

Havens never had a single injury in school and the Mets considered converting him into a catcher.

And then, his back went out, and it was basically over.

He was a great draft pick.

Sad to see, but perhaps inevitable. Shows us that we are all subject to the whim of outrageous fortune.

Good luck, Reese. Hoping that you are well prepared for life after basebell.
